Found a local guy willing to trade his nice restored Paperboy for my PunchOut, which seems like a pretty good trade--what do folks think?

I'd still have 2 issues to work out: 1. Transport (the PB looks like a beast of a cab); and 2. My "no new games unless we ged rid of some existing ones to make room" deal that I'll have to renogotiate with my wife. Any suggestions on either?

I think that is a fairly equal trade, though I personally would prefer the P.O. (but not by much) If the Paperboy is much niccer than yours, then definitely yes.

Damn, I LOVE both of those games. PO's seem easier to find though, so I would make that trade if I were you.

The Paperboy looks pretty nice and was overhauled (the owner was a game tech), including welded handlebars and new pots. I'm sorry to say that, while PO is a cool game--great concept, characters, music, sound, etc.--I'm just not crazy about the game play (i.e., memorizing/learning certain move combos to beat the various opponents). I seem to like more freeform play like in the Williams classics. I've never played Paperboy (in any format) but it sounds like it might keep my interest for a while, no offense to PO fans.

Paperboy is heavy but probably no worse than the punchout.
Sounds like a pretty equal trade. I would rather have the punchout.

Thanks, jow. I think your points on how common they each are (or aren't) is a great one. That, plus the condition of the PB and the fact that I'm just not playing the PO much may tip the scales. Of course, the Exidy Multi and Satan's Hollow I scored not that long ago may explain why not much else is getting played a lot. lol. I finally got over $150K on SH the other day--those minions of Satan sure are tenacious.

In the end, the PO seems like a game that folks who come over may wax nostalgic over but those times are few and far between and I'm just not playing it much otherwise.

I had to think about it for a minute, but count me as more of a Paperboy fan than Punch-Out, but I'd have a hard time parting with either game. The fact that the Paperboy has been essentially bulletproofed for you is a big plus. Paperboy is also a better party game since you don't have to know a bunch of patterns or combos to be decent at it. I also agree that Paperboy is a harder game to find. I drove 3 hours to an auction for a chance at mine and haven't seen a working one nearby since. I have seen about 4 Punch-Out machines within 100 miles since I got mine last year.

isn't trading getting rid of a machine? so, doesen't that take care of itself?

It would if I hadn't agreed to get rid of the PunchOut and another game to make room for Black Widow, Berzerk and Gorf. As it is, it's still a net gain.

Thanks to several of you for the well-considered responses in this thread. Much appreciated.

Paperboy > Punch Out

In Paperboy, you can knock out a fighter by hitting him with a newspaper :)

and a werewolf
and a jogger
and a kid on the porch
and windows
and statues
and archery targets
and tombstones
and shutters
and ...

Personally I would do the trade but I don't really care for punch out. Although we've had a run where it seems a number of punch out's have changed hands I tend to think I've seen more paperboys around than punch out's. I may be wrong on that though as I've never looked into production numbers. Only thing I would point out is that paperboy it actually a pretty challenging game. Personally that's something I love about it but many people probably find it too hard and might not care for it.

Well if you are trading, wouldn't that solve #2?

Both games are pretty valuable when in nice condition. They are both comparable in value. Generally $500-1000 in nice condition.

I love Paperboy much much more than Punch Out!!!

That doesn't really mean too much prolly though.

Punchout replay value: meh

Paperboy replay value: Hells yeah!

Paperboy is a kick-ass game with unique controls. When I got mine I had no interest in it...until I played it. Even if I wanted to trade it, my wife would not let me. Everyone who plays it absolutely loves it. I would take the Paperboy - especially if nice - any day over punchout.
