I mentioned having this CP powdercoated in another thread. In addition, I mentioned that I had to use a deadblow hammer to straighten it out and pound out all of the dents. Then I applied the overlay, clamping the edges for a few days to ensure adhesion around the bends. Then I needed to get the hardware assembled and cleaned up for replacement. I took everything apart, cleaned each piece, then decided to paint all the grey/silver hardware with 3 coats of Rustoleum Appliance Epoxy in a stainless steel finish. Turned out pretty sweet. All I have left is to clean off and replace the adhesive foam on the original cable tie clamps, remount them, then fix the cut and hacked CP wiring harness and install it. Here's where it sits with the buttons, bolts and most of the hardware installed. Top side:

Well there you go for now. I'll post an update when I get the wiring and cable ties fixed/ restored and everything remounted. I'll have to hunt for my 'before' pics sometime. My advice? Take your time on this stuff. The results are always nicer when you do.

damn you take your restorations seriously. Its awesome that you have the patience and dedication for the tedious parts of the restoration to ensure it looks right. nice work man!

Hey thanks man. The painting of the hardware seemed like the right thing to do, as it was discolored and some of it had rust stains. I know the original Punchout CP's were bare gray metal, but I like the black powdercoat better, as it gives the overlay a nice richness. The black looks black. Every time Chris and I get together to slam a few malt beverages and talk restos, the stakes seem to get higher. Have you seen the inside of his Journey machine in the Restoration Showcase Forum? *faints dead away*

I really need to find a local powder coater. Sure does turn out nice.

I did mine with silver rustoleum paint

That looks good. I need to find my original pics of my underside. Is that little bracket near the knock out button supposed to overlap the bottom of the button, or what? We have ours reversed and I wonder if mine's on backwards?

Thanks. Yep, mine's on backwards. I did it with no diagram and I tried the other way first but it didn't look right. I thought it was an auxiliary cp latch bracket, but I see it's a support bracket for that big-assed button. Thanks for the clarification I didn't even know I needed.

I think the bracket is used to prevent people stealing the KO button back in the day.

The powder coating does look sweet. If there is a control panel that needs it, it's Nintendo. They used the crappiest metal that is always rusted. After seeing your pics from the last thread I've decided to make another attempt in finding a local Powder Coater.

I didn't even think of coating mine, I'll have to keep it in mind for the future.

I do have one question though. I didn't feel like making a new thread to ask it but, how stiff should the joystick be on Punch-Out? I get the impression it's supposed to be fairly loose. Mine re-centers but has a little bit of wiggle to it. I was thinking about getting a fresh spring put in to make it tighter just because I think it might feel better. It doesn't affect play so I guess it doesn't really matter.

(sticks, stiffness, wiggling, tightness, no innuendo at all)

Phet-Did you have the entire cp powder coated or just the underside? What did it cost?

The whole thing was media blasted and powdercoated. Not sure how or why you would do just one side? I threw it in with about 25 other arcade parts (coin doors, marquee brackets, piano hinges, bolts) and paid $75 for the lot.

Powder coating, whoa. That's really crazy. Really nice work.

I got lucky and my original overlay was pretty cherry. I am sure there is rust under it!
