I'm in the process of restoring a Punch-Out!! cabinet I got, and it will be my first restoration. I sanded the sides and I'm about to bondo the nicks and dents. After sanding smooth I plan on using primer.

The paint that's on there is pretty darn shiny, and my first impression was to go with a Rustoleum Oil-Based black high gloss. However, after looking at other people's restoration of the cabinet they almost all used a satin, which looks very nice.

The satin should better hide any inconsistencies, but I'm willing to go with higher gloss. What do you think? At current I'm inclined to go with the satin.

My opinions:

1. Don't use glossy. The original finish wasn't that shiny, whether it was paint of melamine. A shinier finish will also accentuate every flaw.

2. I painted a DK Jr cabinet and used semi-gloss. It was sprayed from a paint gun and the end result seemed very close to the original melamine that I had to paint over. Pics here:

The original finish is pretty damn glossy, imo. I would of thought that a semigloss would be a good choice. I think most people choice Satin because it is easier and what they are used to.

Alright, thanks guys. I think 2600 is right, a semi-gloss would probably be the best match. However, the satin does look very nice and since this will be my first go at this it might be a good idea to go with the easier paint.

I've used this paint before myself. I had a problem with it leaving thin roller lines, as it doesn't seem to dry quite as flat as latex I've used. Did you experience any issues like that?

In my experience it dried MUCH slower than latex. I sprayed it though, and don't think I could have gotten good results otherwise. I thinned it with acetone and sprayed it through a cheap HVLP gun. This is my Robotron project-

The front panel (new MDF) and coin doors were both sprayed with the Rustoleum, disassembled of course-

I always spray mine and have gotten a perfect coat every time. Check the picture I posted above and you can see how smooth it is.

I can see, it looks great. I asked because I noticed how nice and even it looked.

I guess the key to getting a nice even coat from this base is spraying it.

Yeah.. to the guy that did the Punch Out, I have half a dozen cabinets you could paint for me..

Good job on that one.

This is Rustoleum oil-based semi-gloss black, cut with 7-8% floetrol, rolled:

That will be the same paint I use on my Punchout resto. They don't sell the satin version at my Menards, so I always get the semi-gloss. I am going to be moving to spraying soon, but rolling has always been good to me.

That moon patrol restoration was a fricken work of art Phet...almost tempted to get you to sell to me ...since finding one in nice original condition is almost impossible.

Thanks Rick. ZF wanted it too, he actually has dibs if I ever decide to sell. I doubt it's leaving The Outer Limits anytime soon, but you never know.
