Howdy!

Im fairly new to diagnosing these game problems. I have been able to successfully intsall a cap kit on a monitor and bring it back to life!!

I have an old Punch out cabinet that im trying to restore. Long story short, It was in storage for 10 years. Brought it out last week and other then the lower monitor needing new caps, everything worked great! It played great, just the cabinet has been used and abused.

However when I now I plug it in, BOTH monitors show SQUARE pixeling?? Im 100% this is NOT a monitor issue but an output issue. After the machine has been plugged in for about 1/2 hour it kicks in and works great on both monitors. However, until it does this warm up period i just stare at square pixels.

Should I be looking at my PCB possibly?? I wanted to keep it as original as possible with the exception of paint, side decals, and control panel decal replacements. I wasn't keen on making it a MAME punch out, but if diagnosing gets too tough I may have to go that route. Power transformer shouldn't be in question as it still has plenty of juice going to the cabinet.

any thoughts??

It's probably your edge connector. Given that it's been sitting in storage for 10 years it could be any number of "bad" connections first try removing the edge connector and cleaning the fingers (contacts) with a pencil eraser. If that doesn't help then try reseating the PROMs and CPU. If it still doesn't work right check the ribbon cables. If it still has issues you need to check that all of your DC voltages from the power supply are within spec it sounds Like a low +5 volts to me but that is just a hunch.

Also, if it has batteries on it still, pull 'em out clean the holder and replace them. This is likely not your problem but battery acid on a board is a bad thing and can cause many issues down the road.

All good stuff right there.. one question does replacing the batteries do anything. Does PO keep high score? i think i just took mine out and didnt replace them..
