Punch Out is one of my older games, and for as long as I can remember, it has had an annoying hum on both speakers. It is not noticeable when it is being played, but when it is idle, it is somewhat annoying. Both monitors look crisp and clean, so I don't know if a cap kit is the answer, but the hum definitely seems tied into the monitors since when I unplug them, it goes away. Any help is appreciated

Thank you! I wasn't quite sure about that. I've pulled both boards and am in the process of ordering the cap kits now. Hopefully that does the trick.

Nintendo games, even with a re-capped audio board, oftentimes still exhibit a hum. Just be forewarned.

So, I recapped both monitors and I still have the hum....it might be a little quieter, but not much. Do I chalk this up to it being a Nintendo, or is there possibly another area I can look (power supply possibly?) Anyone else ever go through this? If it is truly normal to have the hum, I can stop obsessing and call it a day.

Yep... it's the Nintendo hum.

Make sure all the grounds are in place and making good connection. The Punch-Out I had never hummed.

I've heard tale of non-humming Nintendos but I've never actually seen one in person. My understanding is that the hum is caused from the audio amp being too close to the monitor. There may be some sort of ground loop going on there. I'm not exactly sure. I just always read that it was a design flaw. You could use a seperate audio amp and that would probably eliminate the hum all together.

The one I had was completely stock..but there was an ass load of ground straps in it.

I have had 8 or so Nintendo cabs and they all had hum. Of all the Nintendo cabs I've seen and or played at shows or people's houses, I have yet to see one without hum. Most of the time it's barely audible, but it's there. A few I had the hum was awful, but after capping the audio boards it's down to a low hum which is tolerable. - Barry
