Does Punch Out save all high scores or just the top 10? I ask as I've gotten 35th place and 33rd place but they're not being saved.

Also, is there any way to completely erase all scores or are the defaults what they are... (88K for the high, 76K to get in to the top 10)?

I need to know if my PCB is working correctly or not.

Thanks!

Do you have good batteries in it? PO saves all 50 scores indefinitely, provided it has batteries (3 ordinary AA batteries). I've tested it in MAME for sure, and I'm almost certain that I've tested it on the actual hardware. SPO only saves the top 20 scores, and the remaining 30 reset to default when the power is cycled.

You can clear the player scores in service mode, or simply turn the game off and remove the batteries; but the default scores will always be there.

Are the terminals in the battery holder corroded? Any battery damage surrounding the battery holder?

I'm certain now that I've tested it on the actual hardware, because formerly I was under the impression that PO only saved the top 20 scores, while the remaining 30 were reset to default when the power was cycled, because that is what SPO does, and I'm more familiar with SPO than PO. However, I noticed on MAME that PO was saving more than just the top 20 scores, so I put the PO boardset in my machine and played it enough times to have my name in past the top 20, and it did indeed save them all.

BTW, in MAME, SPO behaves just like the real hardware too, in that it only saves the top 20 scores.

I don't have batteries in either boardset anymore; I don't want to have to worry about changing them on a regular basis.

Who are you having trouble with, Bald Bull?

I'm getting 4.78 at the pads on the PCB... and it's not saving. I just got 46th place and it didn't save. Yeah... BB kicks my ass right now.

The voltage is fine (1.5V * 3 in series). I have no idea what the problem would be. Maybe some PO boards only save the top 20 scores like SPO does. You'll need to KO Bald Bull to find out I suppose. Other than that, 2600 is the resident PO/SPO/AW hardware guru; maybe he knows what's going on.

I was about to ask if you are 100% certain PO saves all high scores as when I do a search you're the only one that says it does (but no one else has chimed in on the matter at all here or at BYOAC)...

...i'd hate to be experiencing this frustration for naught.

I guess I should go lower the difficulty to see (its on hardest right now).

BTW - is (3) HARDEST the proper "stock" setting?

There are two aspects to the difficulty settings. One of them controls fighter difficulty, and the other controls the speed of the clock (faster clock = less time to KO the opponent = more difficult). For default, set them both to "1" as displayed in service mode. For easiest, set them both to "0". "3" is of course the hardest for both settings.

You can see from these MAME screenshots that PO saves everything, and SPO only saves the top 20. The scores have been on there for years in both games, since I've rarely played them since I got the real hardware in '06:

And I did test & confirm it on my PO board when I noticed that in MAME PO, all scores were saved rather than just the top 20 like in SPO. That was a few years ago, and I don't have batteries in my PO anymore, and even if I did, I'd have to play 21 games in a row to retest it.

Hows this for strange... I just played a bunch of games... got 30th (my best), 35th, 36th and 46th... in that order. I power down... 30th, 35th and 36th are there but 46th is gone?! It seems to save...40 of the 50 spots? Eh?

Whatever...I'm happy with that.

One thing I do know... I suck. I can't get past that bastard Bald Bull, even at the easiest setting. I can take the first two guys down in one knockdown but Bald Bull kicks my ass...

BTW - Twin Galaxies setting is for MEDIUM (2)... that's what I'll set mine at.

Maybe yours does the same... top 40 only... look, no CIB from 40 down... Hell...NOA is at 39th...perhaps it saves to 38th... 39th on down is the default scores...

No, Twin Galaxies is for "1" as displayed in service mode. I have no idea why they can't get the terminology right. They are looking at it like the second level of difficulty must = "2", not taking into account that it starts at "0" rather than "1".

I have the Twin Galaxies record for SPO, and I've also discussed this with the current TG PO record holder; we both did it at "1" for difficulty and time. Just set the switches the way it says to on the TG Punch-Out page and you'll see that it results in "1" being displayed in service mode.

That could be. I never thought of it only saving the top 40. I just assumed if it saved that many, it would save them all. The last player score on that screenshot is JMB (my nephew) at #38. I can play it a few more times in MAME to see if it saves past #40.

Yeah, it looks like it only saves the top 40 scores. I played 3 more games to push the lowest JMB score to the #41 spot, then shut the game down and restarted it, and the #41 JMB was gone, and the #40 JMB was the lowest player score, with #41 - #50 being default scores. An interesting thing happens when you max out the saved scores and reset the game; instead of the NOA 88700 score being in the #41 spot, the NCL 48000 score is there instead. The exact same thing happens with SPO; except it happens at #21 instead of #41:
