Punch Out! control panel restoration

Looks nice...

Bad news is that according to Pr0k (the guy should know)... Super 77/88/whatnot will destroy your CPO over time. Evidently it's petroleum based and that is supposed to be bad for the CPO. :(

I guess the good news is that I've never seen it happen (though I've never used the stuff for my CPO's either)... so I am just reporting what I've read.

super 77

The adhesive on the back of the CPO is basically the same product from 3M as far as I know. I've had quite a few CPO start to peel off with just the basic adhesive. Super 77 holds things in place nicely.

If my control panels start to vaporize I'll let you know! ;)

I'm always suprised more people don't at least prime the cp. Especially Nintendo since they are so prone to rusting.

There's NO reason to use super77 on anything lexan.. none. Especially a reproduction cpo with fresh adhesive like that one.. the new sheet adhesive on there is stronger than super 77 to start with.. if you have problems with it lifting i'd look more at just how you're applying it moreso than questioning adhesive. For anyone curious, spray some super77 on an old generic overlay and then just let it sit on the shelf for a month, then come back and bend it like you would around a corner on a control panel. It will be MUCH more brittle than it was before.

adhesive

Ok, find me the specs on the 3M adhesive on the backing. Let's compare the two and look at the chemical makeup. thanks

Ooo... a challenge... and you asked the right person since Prok actually SELLS the 3M adhesive sheets that are used for control panels.

Before the pissing match starts I would just like to say the CPO looks great, man. Much improved over the original you had!

Frankly, I am quite interested as well. I've googled and have found numerous sites (including 3M's) that say Super 77 works fine with Lexan. Surely they're not considering Lexan covered artwork, but I digress...

I've noticed how much these panels rust. After removing my old panel, I had it clean as a whistle. In no time, half of it was rusted. How would you go about priming the panel?

For metal priming and any black paint, I use Rustoleum. For priming and painting the metal bits in a cabinet a spray can works just fine. Last time I used the Rustoleum Professional Primer in Grey.

If doing a CP, I spray all the edges including joystick holes etc black just in case the CPO doesn't cover the panel fully.

Thanks for the help. I've actually sanded the rust of my Punch-Out!! panel on two separate occasions. I'll have to do it a third time as my cpo application was botched after the second sanding. I didn't fully understand your technique of the application part in your link.

prep

I wouldn't sand the metal control panel at all. Use a wire wheel on a cordless drill. Clamp the CP to a bench or something and go crazy! It's a lot faster and will buff the control panel to a nice shine. Clean in-between with some denatured alcohol to remove the gummy stuff that builds up and repeat. Clean a couple times with denatured alcohol again at the end before applying the control panel overlay / paint.

Stripping a CP down to bare metal is fine, but you have to seal that raw metal with some sort of primer or the rust will attack it like a hungry dog to a raw piece of steak.
