Punch-Out!! Arcade record "HEARTBREAK" settings question....

Had to swallow a tough pill today ladies and gents.

Been practicing on my Punch-Out!! machine all summer with hopes of taking down the record of 15,999,990 set back in 1986 at a tourny. TG has the record verified in 04 However the ref I have been in contact with mentioned that the record was actually set back in 86.

Anyways, had minor (gall stones) surgery yesterday. Few days off work, can NOT do much but sit so the record was my focus and has been on my calendar for a couple months now.
Set up all the video gear for verification. Had some fun over lapping video while making the necessary VHS tape changes during game play. Went just shy of 11 hours with a 14.2 Million score today. GOOD but NOT good enough!! Sandman had a freak show on fight # 534 and I had to listen to that laugh as if to say, "not today and NOT on my machine you don't!"

Well.......withOUT disappointment we can't appreciate victory. The wife has given me her blessing to try again tomorrow with the agreement that when and "IF" im successful there will be a lot "LESS" time spent on the machine. How more fair can she be?? I swear classic gamers have special wives.

O.K. Hoping someone can answer this question BEFORE I do hit the record and my tapes verified. I have been practicing on the Twin Galaxies Dip settings. No matter settings the game is the SAME for the first 12 fights. After that, the settings will make the remainder of the game harder or easier.

TG has the settings at

Difficulty: Medium [Difficulty 2]
Timer: Long [Difficulty 2]
Rematch: No

To achive this our Dip block must look like this:

Dip Bank A-D:
A-D = OFF

Dip Bank I-P:
I = ON
J = OFF
K = ON
L-N = OFF
O = OFF/UNUSED
P = OFF

My dip block matches the TG settings to a TEE. However, when you plug in the machine WITH THE TG SETTING and boot it up in service mode the screen reads Difficulty 1 Timer 1. If you leave the default (easier) dip settings the screen will read Difficulty 0 Timer 0.

So I am assuming that a Difficulty reading of 0 and Timer 0 would translate to TG's difficulty level 1. While the TG settings that give us a reading on screen of Difficulty 1 and Timer 1 would equal TG's level 2?

Sure hope this doesn't confuse anyone? Kind of tough to explain what im getting at. Guess what im saying is my PCB dip block MATCHES what TG wants for this game. However the service screen only reads a 1 at these settings??

Not sure what would be worse? ALMOST breaking the record after 11 hours of game play. Or breaking the record while having the dip block MATCH TG's settings and then having them reply with a "oh it was a misprint on our web page!"

The ref I have been in contact with has been truly amazing! Answering all my questions. ALL YOU REFS are amazing! Seriously, im NOT sure I would want to sit through an 11 hour marathon of video to verify someone's world record. He didn't even blink when he realized it takes a marathon to hit 16M on Punch-Out!! To take that much time out and ref a game with ZERO compensation speaks volumes as to how passionate some of you gamers are!

Well time for a long nap......I'll check back in the morning BEFORE I make my second attempt. If I wasn't so mentally tired after the 11 hour run I probably would have inserted another coin and started over.

Forgot how much I loved Punch-Out!! Its a true marathon game. NO second chance and NO earning free lives and NO continues. No saving up men for a bathroom break. One chance that is it!

Sandman i shall have my revenge......

It was the same deal with Super Punch-Out. I have no idea why Twin Galaxies puts "[Difficulty 2]" in there. It is the second level of difficulty, but the game itself in service mode labels it as difficulty 1, because the first level of difficulty is 0. In any event, I set my dip switches correctly, and even showed the service mode screen showing the "difficulty 1"s on my submission tape and I didn't have any problems. I can't guarantee that you won't have problems with that bit of confusion (on TG's part) however. I guess it depends on how clever the referee is; hopefully more clever than the person who typed "[Difficulty 2]" in the TG rules.

No matter settings the game is the SAME for the first 12 fights. After that, the settings will make the remainder of the game harder or easier.

Not exactly true. The timer difficulty setting always has an effect. The timer runs faster for higher timer difficulty settings; giving you less time to beat your opponent before the time runs out (which is always a loss of course).

thanks Maxim

didn't realize YOU had the Super record. Super is a MUCH HARDER game then the original.
1 million on super is very impressive by the way.

I have only played it on Mame and can't even get by the secon Bear hugger.

thanks for the info
