POLL Pump Up The Bass - Which game to mod first?

Hooked up the powered sub to these games yesterday:

- Tempest : not bad but not as awesome as I would have hoped. Might need to do more tweaking and get a sub into the cabinet enclosue to get the best effect

- Asteroids : now this was awesome. The big 20pt rocks and space ships have awesome bass when exploding. Ha.

Up next this weekend, I hope to try:

- Centipede
- Battlezone

:)

I'd say try out Robotron and then if you can convert to a Stargate give that a try. A few friends and I did this to a Stargate in high school in a Stereo repair shop ( they also fixed video games, which we helped with ). We hooked up 600+ watts worth of high end equipment that were fixed and being "tested". LOL That was one Friday night that I will carry with me to the grave for a variety of reasons. ;)

Which should be second? :)

1. Battlezone
2. Space Duel
3. Asteroids
4. Tempest
5. Robotron
6. Centipede
7. Lunar Lander
8. Gravitar
9. Black Widow
10. Mad Planets
11. Assault
xx. "other?"

As of today, the leader in the Subwoofer Challenge is ->

(Unfortunately, my BZ cabinet does not have any of those factory holes for bass porting ... LOL)

Of all the games you mentioned, Space Duel is the only one I know that has a substantial amount of bass but only at the fireworks ending scene. As for an amplifier, not many arcade power supplies can supply the amperage that an amp...even a small one, needs to supply any substantial amplifier the juice....especially on the 12 volt line. Although, my friend has been looking at some of the small digital amps that are somewhere under 100 watts. I personally plan on adding an 8" Rockford Fosgate sub to my Earthshaker pinball with an accompanying Fosgate amplier. I will also have to add its own power supply that is capable of supplying at least 5 amps of power....IIRC. On my list of things to do. Best of luck on all your audio endeavors.

I've been looking forward to doing this with Super Sprint. The crashes and the helicopter womp womp wopm are intense already.

It's a crapshoot whether a certain titles does or does not use low frequencies. I thought DK would rumble the house, but it's sort of optimized for the mid-range speaker it possesses. If you have a sub on your computer, try the game out in MAME first and see how much bass it has. Some games will surprise you, you just couldn't hear that range before. Others just don't generate the lows.

In a related, we hooked a big sound rig up to a Galaxy Force while it was
sitting on the loading dock. One Night Only! LIVE SEGA SST BAND EVENT!

It's actually better to tap off of the speaker line, rather than the line-in input to the AR. You can make any speaker-level signal into a line-level with a 10k resistor.
.

Did you happen to make a video of this installation? I'm not an audio person but think this is great ideas in certain cabs. We do it a lot in pins but I'd like to in a vid even more.

Also did you guys figure out a great but small powered/amped sub box to fit easily in most cabs without compromising game?

Sorry I'm late to the show 😏

I don't do videos, but see here:

As for speakers, any decent PC-style speaker system will work, some are better than others. Usually the more expensive ones are better. However if you really want the full effect, you want a floor sub outside of the cab.

Thanks for the link!
I think I'm understanding this somewhat lol. I have a setup ready to go I think with a powered sub box and a 10k resistor, but unsure wear to install resistor and on what line. Should I put it in line off one of these caps I'm guessing(+)? Guessing I tap onto one side of lead of one cap(only on the + side)? Or does the resistor connect between the + and - of the speaker I'm using? That doesn't make sense to me though

Looks like each cap is for each speaker of course. Thanks for the help, I'm an idiot 😆

You actually need two resistors, a 10k and a 1k. And you only tap off of one of the AR outputs, not both. You can use SPKR1 or SPKR2, doesn't matter. And tap off of the (-) side of the cap, NOT the (+) side.

Basically it's the picture in the link above, except SPEAKER OUT is the (-) side of one of those two large caps, and SPEAKER GND is the AR ground (GND).

A good place to do the mod (where I do it) is right behind the AR speaker connector, on the back side of the board. You can install the two resistors there, where the speaker and GND signals are, and you can tie them to an RCA cable for the output, which you can zip tie to the board elsewhere.

Ahhh ok I was wondering if I needed a 1k also. 1/4 watt good enough for this, that's what it says in the link diagram? Thanks again sir

Still sitting on the step. One day will fit this (or a smaller one) inside the cabinet.
