Ok I know nothing about the PSP system. With that being said My son want's a psp and I see several to choose from 1000,1001,2000,3000 and psp go. I found out the go is download only.
I don't care about hacks and mods. Basically I just need to know the difference in the models. Will early release games play on these models and will new release as well. It seems the 3000 is the newer model and feebay has a bunch of 1000 and 2000.
I thank you in advance.

Just so you know, I have owned the first three models. That being said, I personally like the 2000 the best.

Here's kind of a breakdown:

1000:
larger size (same size screen)
heavier
the disc door has a slider to open it

2000:
lighter, thinner
can be charged through the USB port
the disc door opens by just pulling it open
with the right cord, can be viewed on an HDTV

3000:
lighter than the 2000, but feels cheap in my opinion
screen doesen't look as good. If you eyes are good enough, you can see the "scan lines" on it, side by side with a 1000 or 2000, the colors seem a little washed out as well
same disc door as 2000
can also be charged through the usb
can also be viewed on an HDTV

that's about all I can think of, off hand.

Mindl3ss' summary is pretty good. When they moved from the 1000 to the 2000 they moved the speaker location, and when they moved from the 2000 to the 3000 they added in a microphone for Skype (previously you would have needed a headset with a mic to use Skype). Also the 2000/3000 have a shorter battery life than the 1000, but you can still get a lot of play off one charge on the 2000/3000.

I have a 2000 and have had no problems with it. The games for it come out at a much slower rate than the other consoles/handhelds though. While there's a decent back catalog the in the works new stuff is pretty bleak right now.

When Sony made the PSP 2000, they doubled the RAM to make it work for Skyping, turned almost everything to plastic, and made it slimmer and lighter. I personally like my 1000 the best. I don't feel like I'm going to break it while playing. All models play the same games and same UMD movies. The only real difference comes when you want to skype or maybe when you are using a location free player. The older models are cheaper for the same reason that a fat PS2 is cheaper than a Slim PS2...it's older and not as sleek.

I love my PSP-2000 (Star Wars Edition White with Darth Vader silhouette on the back). Though you don't care about this feature, I do have it modded with the latest custom firmware (I think). It's basically my console emulation machine on-the-go.

I like the fact I can still use my UMD library which the PSP Go can't obviously. This was a big factor of choosing not to "upgrade." I have a component out cable that I can hook up to my flat screen which is also very cool.

I have it setup for:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC/GBA
GENESIS
SMS
TGX16
ATARI 2600
CPS1
CPS2
NEO GEO MVS
MAME (classic games run fine, most newer games won't run or run slow)

It's definitely awesome. I've heard mixed reviews on the 3000, but I've never played one so I can't really contribute any advice on that one.
