Anyone have any inside info on the PS4 coming either next year or 2013? Mainly wondering if the system will be backwards compatabile and if it will use mostly move type controllers that the Wii crap uses.

Current gen games look pretty nice and people seem happy with their online play. Not sure what new systems could really offer right now to get people to upgrade.

3D and motion gaming both seem to have flopped. The Kinect sold quite well at launch, but I have seen very few games for it, and even fewer people still talking about it.

1080p resolution maybe? They pushed HD pretty hard in the marketing this gen and "higher high definition" might be a hard sell next time.

I think it's too early to say 3D gaming's flopped. It just hasn't reached a tipping point of most gaming households having a 3D TV. Will that day come? Who knows.

According to Sony, manufacturers are having a hard time selling any new big screen TVs at all, let alone 3D capable ones. It seems consumers aren't really understanding the differences between new models and their existing sets. An LCD is an LCD as far as they're concerned.

There's some truth to that, I suppose.

The lack of 3D television programming is also a problem.

As far as 3D TV is concerned, I think people are waiting for technology that allows you to watch it without the glasses.

They did not do a very good job of marketing it either. A lot of people seem to think that a 3D TV can only show 3D images and you always have to wear the glasses when in fact it can show either 2D or 3D programming, and most of the time you will probably use it for 2D viewing.

If anything, 3D should just be another feature of every TV and not something that costs extra.

Yep and when that happens and prices come down, more games will test out 3D gaming. Then we'll see if it'll truly take off or fail.

The hardware is old and the PC is eclipsing the home consoles now. Plus new console launches bring new franchises.

i would not say that cell processor's are old due to most programmers having hell of a time programming for them. They have yet to be utilized to their potential. So a move to a new type of hardware is not necessarily the answer

Its not the CPU its the GPU. PS3 video hardware is weaker than the 360's 7900gts which is weak sauce. Its powerful but the video hardware will always hold it back.

I for one will not be getting a new console, probably for several years at the very least. I still feel that the current consoles have not even been fully exploited.

And I really do not see what new could be offered at this point. I mean the PS3 already does 3D, it's just that not a lot of games use it yet. -- Hence current consoles not even being fully exploited.

The Wii's motion controllers have only really been used creatively in some party games like WarioWare and RavingRabbids and X360 Kinect hasn't really been used well except for some dancing games. The PS3 Eye camera had a lot of cool tech demos but they never were fleshed out into games.

I think we need to use what we have more instead of just releasing something new which developers will just have to start from scratch with.

Agreed, I don't think it's time for new consoles yet.. if anything they might start doing presentations in 2012, with planned releases for '13 or '14

As far as what they could do, you could just look to the PC market, which has obviously passed up the quality of consoles but not so much yet that it's a game breaker imo (if they released a console with current PC tech I don't think it'd be enough of an advance to last for another 7 years)

Considering most console games now run at 720p or less, and 30fps (sacrificing resolution and control response/FPS for effects/detail), often with lower quality lighting and post-processing effects like anti aliasing that blurs the image (especially on PS3)... Recent games like Arkham City, Crysis 2, Skyrim and Battlefield 3 seem to be pushing the eye candy factor and CPU on consoles to the limit... Yes, there's definitely room for another generation of proper 1080P HD consoles, especially when you compare the console versions of these games to the PC versions.

Although the quality of console exclusives that are not compromised by having to develop the game for two different consoles is pretty darn incredible - Uncharted 3, and Forza 4 to name two.

Next gen 360 details have been hinted at - 6 core CPU (up from 3 core), and AMD supplied graphics chip, with either 2GB or 4GB RAM (up from 512MB).

The problem is 1080p and anti-aliasing are very hard to sell. Most people think their current setup looks good enough. Add in online play and something like Modern Warfare and people don't have much incentive to even buy new games, let alone new hardware.

I don't get the 1080p mentions. The PS3 already supports 1080p. In fact, I can't stand how it downscales 720, so I only buy 1080p games.

The problem I see here is not graphics, it's gameplay. I am bored with the stardard behindview action game and first-person shooter. I want developers to use the unique features of each of the consoles.

In my mind, if they release a new console just for the sake of better graphics, then the main point has been totally missed. Because then developers will rinse and repeat the old gameplay just for the sake of "learning the hardware" all over again and nothing new will come of it.

They are just starting to get creative with the console we have now. To in-essence reset everything now for a new console would be a step backwards, and would turn me off from buying it.

There is a lot you can do when you combine 3D with motion sensing (especially head tracking).

It's like some Lawnmowerman shit.

Yeah, I don't see why we need new consoles. Maybe people that play a lot of PC games can appreciate this, but I would assume most of the mainstream gaming community buy consoles. I haven't heard many people complain about the PS3 or 360 being underpowered- just PC gamers. The Wii is a different story though, the graphics definitely need updating.
