PS3 Slim and Price drop

I still have that hacked up z-64and n64 in a pc case with the hard drive mod done somewhere in my storage closet in the basement, I think it has all the roms as well..

Too bad some chick still has my N64 :( I really need to get another one, I guess.

Oh, and we picked up a PS3 phatty today, the kids have been saving their money, waiting for the price drop, there is no way I was going to be able to make them wait till the slim came out now that it was cheaper.
We now have the trifecta (All 3 main consoles), hell we have 3ea 360's in the house, it sad really...

The slim is replacing the old models. The 80GB has been dropped to 299 at least until the Slim launches. Which seems stupid. You might as well wait for the 120GB slim for the same price :p.

That is a bit risky tho... You don't know how good the slims are going to be...

Sony tends to cheapen the build quality/features over time... Compare the audio quality of the Launch Play station to the latter models to the psx.

The current models are one of the best Blu Ray Playes on the market... Are the new ones going to be as good? Or will they be more like the Black Friday Specials?

We don't know.

I may be wrong on this but i think that the problem with the audio on early PS3 models was that it would not decode HD audio formats (True HD and DTS-HD) over HDMI on receivers that were capable of decoding those audio formats over HDMI.

This was later fixed in a software update for all consoles that are connected to the internet. So all models of PS3 should have the same audio quality if they have the newest firmware update. Im going off memory so i could be wrong though.

Also I dont think the Slim will be cheaply built.Sony makes good hardware in my opinion. I dont agree with their proprietary formats (Bluray being the exception). If anything the xbox 360 is cheaply built hardware and was rushed to the market. What makes the Slim PS3 slim is that they shrunk the processor size, have less USB ports, etc.

I think I'm going to make the purchase when it comes out.

My 360 is less than a year old and doesn't get played a lot, and the DVD drive already went bad.

Though I will give the MS service dept kudos, the entire repair door to door was about a week.

If you don't play the 360 a lot, and since most games come out on both PS3 and 360... What games are you going to play on the PS3? Is it just going to be a glorified Blu-Ray player?

About the only 'exclusives' on the PS3 that look good are...
Little Big Planet
Metal Gear Solid
Gran Turismo 5 (forthcoming)

Yeah, reliability was certainly an issue with early Xbox 360s. Most people I know with early Xbox 360s had RROD problems with them, and some had to send them back 2 or 3 times, but all of them had their warranties extended and consoles fixed free of charge with a quick turnaround. I think they just replaced the motherboards in them and sent them back.

I have a 65nm Jasper Xbox 360 console... so we'll see how reliable it turns out to be.

That's about it for me. Those and Naruto Storm (I'm a sucker for those damn games for some reason).

Yeah, I've considered this as well. To be honest, I expect the first generation of slims to be fairly craptacular. Then again, it's thinner.

And the girlfriend likes it and is willing to get one of those models. So there you go :p

I actually traded a 360 for a PS3 just to play Socom, I'm also looking forward to MAG. They're both solid systems, the thing I liked about 360 the most is its online service (well worth the $50 a year) and features like Netflix streaming, playing your own mp3 playlist in place of game music, etc.. PS3 might be a bit better media player, easier to swap out hard drives and the controllers are a little less clunky imo

A 360 price drop is pretty much inevitable now, can't wait to get another one

Yeah, just a shame that the Xbox 360 has no WiFi as standard, and accessories like the HDD and 'official' WiFi adapter are stupidly overpriced.

I have a WiFi router running DD-WRT in bridge mode I'm gonna use instead. Want to try the media streaming functions.

Agreed. Apparently swapping out the hard drives isn't all that difficult, just a bit of a pain. But still better than paying like $100 or whatever for a 120GB. But yeah, the wireless adapter is stupidly overpriced. I think the cheapest I've ever seen it was $75 on sale. Not to mention the only accessories made to match my Elite are the controllers. I really hate that shit :p

You mean swapping the actual HDD inside the Xbox HDD clip-on unit for a larger one?

Here in Australia, the WiFi adapter, and the 60GB HDD are AUD$150 EACH =~ US$120, and the 120GB HDD is AUD$200 =~ USD$160!

Newest release games frequently go for AUD$109 to AUD$119.

Not to mention, after the PS3 'price drop', we still pay AUD$500 =~ USD$400...

It's expensive to be a gamer in Oz...

swapping the hard drive is a piece of cake on the PS3. i just put in a 500GB in mine that i got from newegg for $72. Its been working great. Took only about 30 minutes to swap and 25 of that was transferring all the music and video files i had to the new hard drive.

For those trying to decide between Ps3 and 360:
For Netflix there is a little program called PlayOn by mediamall. Google it. I cancelled my cable and i strictly use playon because it allows you to stream tons of video content from the web and if you have a netflix account you can stream your instant queue to the PS3 using it.
Also keep in mind that the PS3 online service (PSN) is FREE. It doesnt have as many features as the xbox live but they will add those features in future updates. PS3 also comes with a built in internet browser and a free online virtual world to play and meet new people in called PS HOME.

I know i sound like a huge fanboy. But i dont think Sony advertises the features of the PS3 very well. So some people may over look it , not knowing everything about it. For all that it includes its actually a really good deal. especially since the new price cut. I own all 3 systems but the PS3 gets way more use than the others.

Yeah. As in, buy the "cheap(er)" 20GB HDD from Microsoft if you don't have one already and then replace the internal hard drive with other, and move the data over. A buddy here at work did it recently but I think he had to re-download all his Guitar Hero / Rock Band songs which sucked, I'm sure.

I realize that, but I was just making it clear that it can be done on the 360 as well, for those who want to.
