PS3 Slim and Price drop

Not me... My wife just won me a free Xbox 360, so no real need for a PS3...

About all I'd really play on the PS3 is Metal Gear Solid 4, and Gran Turismo 5 (whenever it finally shows up...)

Apparently the PS3 slim doesn't have PS2 backwards compatibility, and won't let you run any existing versions of Linux like the PS3 Phat does, for those that care...

Yeah, but they stripped PS2 backwards compatibility a long time ago anyway, so that was to be expected. I'm expecting PS2 digital distribution at some point anyway.

I'm just happy the chrome is gone and it won't look like some huge eye-sore like the phat.

Wonder what will happen to the prices of the ones that are in stores now. Will they be even less ? I want one and was waiting for the price drop. Especially for blue-ray and instant viewing with netflix.

I like my launch day 60 GB PS3. Big, fat, and more backwards compatible than any other version.

Mattroid is right though. Anyone's decision to buy or not buy one of these slims shouldn't really be influenced by backwards compatibility because Sony dropped that a long time ago. If you really want the backwards compatibility you have to go searching for a launch console on ebay.

My launch PS2 still works just fine, but we're considering picking up a PS2 slim before they go off the market in case the old one ever craps out on us. I mean hell, I still play my GC games on my GC, not my Wii. BC is nice, but never really gets used here.

My PS2 still works fine too. I still have it hooked up along with my Gamecube and original Xbox (and Dreamcast and N64 and 2600 and...). I don't really care too much about backwards compatibility, but some people do.

At the moment, I think the oldest system I have hooked up is the Dreamcast. After the move, I should have the old CRT TV in the bedroom, so my guess is that the older systems will be hooked up in there. Too bad some chick still has my N64 :( I really need to get another one, I guess.

Man, that girl was fun to play with.

She was pretty good at playing Mario Kart, too.

Yeah N64 rocks. I picked up some awesome games that I never had back then at a flea market recently. Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart 64, Excitebike 64, Dr. Mario 64. My wife got me Paper Mario off ebay too since I really liked Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario. Especially Thousand Year Door. That game is awesome.

Wow. I honestly think I've clocked more multiplayer hours with MK64 than any other game ever. It's hard to believe you never had it back in the day. EB64 wasn't half bad, either, but I don't think I ever finished unlocking everything.

I got an N64 at the beginning of my graduate school days and didn't have a lot of time to play games. I think the only N64 games I had back then were Super Mario 64, Turok 1 and 2, Donkey Kong 64, Ocarina, and Majora.

I had a SNES which I wasted huge hours of my life on, but I never had an N64... Missed out on a lot of good games there, particularly the Zelda games. Most are available for Wii virtual console now.

Backwards compatibility is useful to me for getting them past the wife... I am near the critical mass of her tolerance for these consoles. First thing the wife asked when the 360 arrived was: "So, can we get rid of a few of these other old consoles around the place?"

Most newer releases come out on both 360 and PS3, with little to no noticeable difference between them, so I can't see a lot of point to having both... So no PS3 for me anytime soon.

Pretty sure retailers will drop the price of the PS3 phat to below the slim by a small margin, to shift them out the door faster.

Well, I may get one for that lower price. I wish it was still BC, but as my slim PS2 is still in great shape, I guess I can live without it.

Plus having a Blu-Ray player in the house gives me the chance to get an HDTV someday....

See, I had the opposite approach. I didn't even want to consider the new gen consoles until I had an HDTV.

Well, of course I'd like to do the same thing, but a $300 gaming systems is cheaper than a $1000 TV...

I'm still not getting one anytime soon as I don't have the free time to really ever play my consoles at home.

This announcement did cause my day to be rather busy and interesting today.
