My PS3 has taken crap on me and now it doesn't work. When I turn it on it just gives me a red screen saying a serious error has occurred. I can't believe the poor quality of these gaming consoles. I had an xbox 360 that got the RROD so I decided to switch to PS3 and now 3 years after purchasing it. It is broken. I still have my original NES and it works perfectly and I'm sure I put in many more hours of gaming on it over it's life and it's never given me a problem other than having to blow into the games to get them to work. So I'm not sure if I should buy a new PS3 because I have a bunch of games, downloadable content, and peripherals or should I switch to xbox which I don't have anything for anymore.

I just can't believe this piece of shit.. Ridiculous!!!

New game systems have a lot more moving parts and gadgets inside so they will always fail more than the old school cartridge-based consoles. Get a new PS3 and get the 2 year extension on the warranty from the PlayStation Store. You have enough money in it that it would be a waste to switch to another system and start over.

NES was a great system, but every and I mean every NES fell victim to the blinking gray screen of death. Now an Atari 2600, those will last forever. Plus I still have my original xbox, and that thing is still running strong after all these years. I dont know what they did when they designed it, but they should have used that same team when they made the 360.

My Nes has never had a problem. I must be lucky. I do have a modded original Xbox That runs like a champ. I agree that thing is like a tank. I pulled the trigger and ordered a new one. I guess ill just be think it keeps saving me money since I no longer pay for cable.

You should call sony and tell them about the problem with the red screen of death. I had one happen a few months ago. I called the service department and they explained it was out of warranty and that it would be $100 to get it repaired/replaced.

I spent the $100 and got a system that was on a low firmware. I think 3.30. Which is what I had wanted in the first place.

The ps3 is a fun system to mod as long as you aren't too concerned with online play. They may have gotten a way to get modded systems back online by now though.

I like to keep my stuff backed up. =)

Newer systems generate a lot of heat and at the same time try to look aesthetically pleasing, so they cram all of that heat into a very small box. Obviously it's important to keep a lot of airflow around the system, don't set it on carpet or in a crammed entertainment center, etc.. and periodically clean out the system's vents to make sure air can flow freely

I thought about sending it to Sony, but they wanted 150 and it only came with a 90 day warranty. I've already repaired 3 units with ylod so I figure Its only a matter of time till my solder joints crack. 250 for a new one I think was the best option at this point.

FWIW, I still play on my launch PS3. Easily over 3000 playing hours on it, and it has been our only DVD/BR player since it was new.

I'd call Sony.

RROD................

I hope to god this thread doesn't turn into a fanboy showdown where my system is better than yours. If I wanted to see that shit I'll just head over to GameFaqs.

Klov is a more mature forum than that. I mean everyone knows ps3 is clearly the superior system. :p it wouldn't be much of a debate.

I have both and honestly play the 360 more. However PS3 has better exclusives but dual platform games seem to suffer on the PS3 in general. I recently built a new PC and will probably ditch the 360 soon.

So far though Ive owned

6 rrod 360
1 PS3 that wouldn't boot
1 PS3 where the drive failed

360 failure rate is much higher but I actually played it more still sucks to see such high failure rates I would be fine with the damn things in ATX cases if need be ;-)

This is exactly why I buy all of my electronics at Costco (if they carry what I'm looking for)

When the 360 came out, we bought the $500 "bundle". A year later, RROD. Walked in to Costco (left the hard drive in the car) They opened the box and said go grab another one.

Another year later RROD...back to Costco. They tell me to get another and they will be giving me a $150 gift card since the price had gone down.

I also ended up with the newer model at the time bigger HD and HDMI.

Winning!

Can't wait for the plasma in the living room to take a shit. (I know, I'm a little honest).

Costco was known for their lax return policy, but they have become much more strict recently. At least, they say they have. I can't speak from experience on that. I just know there was a huge thing about it a year or so ago, people were rushing to return used stuff before they started cracking down.

Definitley heat... Notice the large exhaust vent on the right-side and also front-bottom of the unit. I once left a bottle of water there and after playing for 10 minutes the cold water was on the hot side in my well AC'd home.

I also clean those vents once a week just to make sure there are no obstructions or dust in there. I do the same with all of my electronics.

I think they are still doing it. My dad just recently took back a carpet cleaner that he had for 2 years. The motor had burned up or something. They let him exchange it for a new one.

ive NEVER had a console crap out on me.. i think some people beat the hell out of them like playing hrs upon hrs.. leaving the system on CARPET.. leaving the system paused for a long time... leaving power on (like the red light on ps3) and never turning the switch OFF in the back...putting SKINS on the game...heat is the worst enemy for systems..things like this can hurt your system.. ive owned EVERY system from PONG to PS3 and ive never had any problems with any of the systems!!!

try reflowing the big processors inside. You can do it with a hot air rework station, or with a GOOD heat gun! THey run so hot over time they desolder themselves!!! Its already screwed, cant hurt to try...

this is a 5 part series.. looks daunting, but almost anybody can do this if they are handy at all..

Guess that's why they call you the LUCKYMAN...;)
