So i thought id finally getting around to buying a PS3. Im not a big gamer but I do play some but I also wanted it for all the other features that you can use it for...... like streaming. Looked at the store and they are still a little pricey so I looked on CL. Hell the prices havent really dropped on buying a used one either. I figured by now there would be some good deals to be had on some used units but I now see thats not the case. I just keep looking every day in the hopes of finding a deal I cant pass up.

Come one guys, I think he's fishing for a cheap PS3. Who's gonna bite? :D

Not really cause Id hate to have it shipped plus Id like to be able to see that its working before I fork over the dough. Just nothing good local yet.

Rumor has it that the next-gen consoles are just around the corner. If you can go a year or two without a PS3 it'll be worth it.

I doubt they're around the corner, unless you're talking late 2012 and beyond. I don't think anyone's ready to up the production costs just yet, they're still all struggling to deal with the cost of a AAA game on the current gen.

If you buy a PS3 160 from Amazon, you get a $50 credit towards your next purchase: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003VUO6H4/

That's the deal I got in December. Combined with signing up for a Sony credit card with 20,000 "reward points" on first purchase, my total cost was $50 for a nice new PS3 slim. The Sony card deal is no longer in effect, but if you watch slickdeals.net, it might happen again.

I'm actually going to be selling mine in the next week, but I'm thinking of going the Ebay auction route, because I am selling it as a bundle with all my Blu-Ray movies and games and accessories.

Yeah, sadly there is going to be no new Playstation out for a good while. I think I heard this is going to be by far the longest console generation.

Good deals are to be had on Craigslist though. I got my 250 GB slim with two controllers and 6 good games for $250. It's been working great(knock on wood) so I think I got pretty lucky. I sold 5 of those games and basically got myself a like-new PS3 with two controllers for $150. BUT you are right that re-sale value is still very high for the most part. I was surprised when I was finally in the market for one(after my 360 died of course).

As for a blu-ray player(personal rant)...seems to be a novelty for me at the moment. I'm perfectly satisfied with owning all of my favorites on widescreen DVD's to be upscaled. I'll buy a Blu-Ray of a movie I want if it's cheap but I don't see the point of buying 70's and 80's movies in high definition if it's not an absolutely must have movie for me(like the Good Bad and the Ugly for example!).

PS3 is already cheap. $300 for everything it does is a VERY GOOD DEAL ! Ill admit that I am an avid PS3 fan, but that's because it is a do it all machine for a great price. I'm probably telling you what you already know ..... but for all the features you get it is a STEAL. Here are a few I can name off the top of my head:

- Gaming (disks or download)
- BLURAY PLAYER
- 250GB more or less of storage (pics, movies, music, games)depending on what console you get
- Streaming from computer (I use Playon for this but there are free options)
- FREE online gaming (big one for me)
- ability to swap hard drive for bigger one or use USB external drives
- uses non proprietary hardware meaning you dont have to buy a SONY bluetooth headset for voice chat. You can use almost any brand.
- wireless internet built in
- 3D ready
- reliable hardware
- access to Netflix, HULU, VUDU, PSN store (some require membership)

I understand trying to get the best deal possible. There are always promotions being run.Every now and then Walmart does a $100 giftcard with PS3 purchase.I wouldn't risk buying a used console that you don't know how it has been taken care of when at $300 it is already cheaply priced. Just keep a look out. You will find a deal and when you get it you will be very pleased with what you get for your money. just my opinion anyway.

Yeah, I forgot the next-gen Playstation will take longer because Sony said that they want a chance to look at their competition first, so they can make the best system possible..

It'll be worth the wait.

Here is another question for you guys. I have an older HD projection tv and it doesnt have an HDMI inlet. Can the PS3 also be hooked up by componet cables.

I payed 380 for mine almost 2 years ago which was just a 20 dollar deal, lol but it was worth it. I haven't had any problems with it and use it almost every day. If you are gonna spend over $250 for a gaming system then you might as well as buy it new just because you never know what you are getting with used consoles. They could have had it running 20 hours a day or never properly shut it off. It could be a yellow light just waiting to happen.

PS3 will run via HDMI, component, s-video, or composite.

I'd be cautious about buying a used PS3. PS3s have a couple common hardware problems after extended use. First, the blu-ray drives will eventually stop reading blu-rays. The early 60GB, 20GB, 40GB use a single laser drive that just doesn't last. I had to replace my 60GBs after a couple years. (easy swap) Also, all PS3s will eventually have the same long-term heat related breakdowns as the 360. The PS3 will show a yellow light at boot (YLoD) and shut down after a couple seconds. The same reflow or heat gun repair as a RRoD 360 will revive it briefly, but once it has failed it won't last. I think any anonymous purchase of a used PS3 carries a pretty big risk...

PS3s have had a more durable dual laser blu ray drive for years now. And, the latest 160GB Slims run cooler than any previous models so they're less likely to YLoD.

Amazon and Best Buy both have $50 gift card/future credit offers this week on the 160GB Slim. Unless you have the patience to wait for a better deal, that's probably the best version & price for a PS3 right now.

Well said, this exactly why I bought mine. People complained about the price but I don't think realized that a Sega CD and PS1 cost $300 when it was released. For 100 dollars more you get a powerhouse of a system that's built to last.

Like I said earlier im not a huge gamer but do like some games here and there. Will 160GB be more than enough. I asume that all that can be put on there is games that are downloaded from PSN. I guess I really never understood why some people would need such a large HD for these.

The hard drive isn't just for PSN downloads... most retail games install data to the hard drive on first load. GT5 has the biggest hard drive install at around 10GB. Most are under 1GB. Almost every PS3 game downloads patches that install to the hard drive. It seems like they usually ship unfinished games then finish up or fix bugs for a launch day patch. If you're not going to play a game for a while, you can easily erase the installed data/patches without losing your saved progress. They're stored separately.

You can also store videos, MP3s, photos, etc on the PS3 and it's a decent media player. It'll stream from a networked PC too, so you might be better off storing data on a PC and playing remotely on the PS3.

For a casual gamer, 160GB should be plenty.

Thats cool. I just never understood exactly what all the HD was for. Streaming is one of the biggest reasons I want it. Id love to be able to start getting all my DVD's onto a HD and then be able to just pack them all away so they arent taking up space in my house.

you can get a 2.5'' laptop hd and swap it into a ps3 if you ever want to upgrade. i have a 500gb in mine. its loaded with a ton of music. considering the price diffrence sony puts on their new systems just because of the hard drive size you could buy the cheapest ps3 new, and a 500gb hd and still come in under the money on the larger ps3. i bought the mgs4 bundle a few years ago. that was just about the last ps3 that played ps2 games, it has all these extra sd card slots, 4 usb ports and does everything else any other ps3 does. and after literally thousands of hours or use it never broke down or skipped a beat
