Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen or heard of a new PS3 having a seal that was obviously cut, and then another new one placed directly over the broken one?

I ask because I ordered one directly from Sony's site and received it today and see this. I got a discount and am wondering if that's part of the reason? Probably nothing to worry about, but when you pay that much for something, you want to be sure you're getting what you paid for and not some refurb or some shit, when it's not marked as such :p

Try to get through to support now, but the hold time is nuts. I'm sure they'll just tell me it's no big deal, but whatever.

I would think they should be able to tell by the Serial #
Maybe it was one they opened at the factory for QC purposes? I think legally the refurbished ones have to be clearly identified as such.

It was probably a QC pull, which is why it was sold by Sony. If it was referbed, they are legally obligated to package it as such.

Congratulations, you should actually pay more for that one, as you can be assured that it will run correctly. If it didn't pass you wouldn't be buying it. Everybody else gets the ones that "should work, statistically speaking". :top:

If this was bought at a store or something, I could see this happening, as the store would probably put their anti-theft strips inside the box and then reseal it....

I believe he's referring to a seal on the PS3 console itself, and not on the box it came in.

Was it a refurbished machine?
Nope, it was new. I'd expect this with a refurb, as I stated in the OP.

Pretty sure that a store could get in a bit of trouble for doing that on something like this. That's why they're either behind glass or wrapped with security "tags" of some kind.

Nope, I am talking about the box itself.

Regardless, I finally got though to someone that said I could return it if I wanted and that she'd never heard of such an issue (she sounded pretty shocked and fairly concerned, too). I told her that I'd go ahead and open it to see and if there was anything else that indicated it had been handled, I might return it (fingerprints all over stuff, system warranty seal broken, scuffs/scratches, etc).

It actually looks fine, which is what I figured, but I wanted to play it safe :)

They have you now. It was meant for someone else.

The clomping on the roof won't be Santa. It will be the guys in Jackboots
with the unmarked helicopters come to recover the precious. :)

You have 15 seconds to make your escape.

My launch 60gb box didn't even have a safety seal sticker. I waited a bit to long so I took it without question. Other than that Every other one I have bought has had a nice sealed box.

On a related safety seal note. I stopped at Walmart the other day and they had a bluray player with some weird green tape all over it. I went to look at it and it was Department of homeland security tape. I was tempted to buy it as I thought that was pretty funny seeing it on a shelf.
