prototype (?) Williams Police Force

I have always wondered why people think proto types are worth more? They have less then the final product, Must be the red pcb's or something. I would agree 5200 over priced, At the end of the day it is still a Police force.

Not necessarily. As in the case with F14 which has different color flashers and more of them.

Rarity on a good game, IMO, adds some value. I have a proto qbert which, at the very least, adds some fun/cool factor.

I'd rather have a standard one.
Proto seems almost undesirable.
I'm into playing my games,
not bragging about them.

Depends on the game. I have a sample pinball magic. The differences are mostly cosmetic and just interesting. It has 0 gameplay changes. Downside is that it uses different boards, sockets instead of pcbs for the backbox lighting, etc. Makes it tougher to diagnose when it has issues.

On the other hand I have a sample radical with the proto style ramp. Unlike everyone else I can convert it to play the proto roms which does make a big difference in gameplay.

Really it comes down to the title and what the differences are. I had a buddy with a proto als garage band goes on world tour. I could have traded him my standard one, but there are zero gameplay differences. It has to use an older set of roms due to one coil on the playfield that doesn't impact the game play at all. In short, its a worse game.

I had a sample Scared Stiff that had several features left off the standard. Protos often have features that are cut to save money. The collapsing building on Earthshaker and 3rd magnet on TZ are a couple big ones. If price is the same or slightly more I would always take the proto.

Even if the proto has different/better art and better gameplay/features?

Where? What?
Name something!

OK yeah earthshaker bldg... in some cases yes, better and worth it.
in this case and most others, notsomuch

Its not always less stuff. TZ protos had the third magnet installed. Sometimes its cool to see the evolution. I might pay a premium for one but it would be a large premium. If its a proto for something that did't get produced or had major changes between proto and production, its more interesting. for this, no save post, messed up text and some other minor stuff, not worth much extra, if any, in my opinion.

Proto parts are not always useful though. TZ is an exception, but it also limits what roms you can use.

Junkyard was supposed to have a magnet under the wrecking ball. Some have the magnet, but the software doesn't support it. There was a proto WWF on ebay years ago with 3 magnets under the playfield like tz. No software for it. I know of a turtles proto with bad roms that was useless because it had an entirely different upper left corner that the regular software didn't support.

We have an early Junk Yard with the magnet core under the Wrecking ball really wish someone could make a mod to make that work, that would be sweet.

The Earthshaker building drop early pins are defenitly cooler than just having the mod.

Thats interesting, I had no idea that was in there...Weird they had it but didnt program it...Someone could figure that out I'm sure. Wonder how many JY proto's there are?

I think several Sample JY's had the magnet core some only had the Core like ours that is drilled through the playfield just bracket and core. Others had a magnet also. I believe there is a plug near it for the magnet can't remember and ours is at a friend's house now on loan.
Someone on Pinside has a Proto with a lot of differences like the red boards under the playfield and several other things including the magnet and core under the Wrecking ball but he was doing a playfield swap to a standard and documented a lot of the differences.
I'm not sure what the numbers are on Protos and Samples JY's with the magnet. Our Sample (I'm guessing) IPDB says there are Protos and Samples has everything else the same as any other JY except for that magnet core under the ball.
Would be nice if someone could get it to do something, like catch a ball during multiball or block a shot into the crane entrance.
