Prototype PC-10 Carts on ebay

I think if they were really test market prototypes that they would have the printed labels like all the factory conversion chips. Second they would have the name of the game in the menu.

Even if they were in house prototypes they should have the name in the menu and instructions so they know what game they are testing.

I agree with Rory. Looking at the closeups you can see the remnants of the previous chip info sticker. These seem as repurposed chips. If they were proto they would have clean chips not repurposed chips.

Interesting nonetheless.

I can't imagine someone going through the trouble of modding the BIOS to have it say NEW GAME 1, rather then just listing the title. I mean if you are going to sell bootlegs...

conversely if this guy has figured out how to change the display name there are far better options again then NEW GAME 1.

atari would reuse chips. they would reuse proto cartridge cases too. I have some carts that have some 2600 with 2 or 3 labels on them.

since they are just eproms in generic carts, I don't see why so much fuss. Someone must have the rom data. burn your own...

Exactly!
The games suck, Double Dragon is common, and there is probably not much of a way to verify their authenticity.... I think these are already going for about $40 more than they are worth, even if they are legit.

I think the seller may likely be telling the truth. I think the details all add up and are pretty consistant with how market testing was done. If these carts have a modified instruction menu that matches the title then I would say there is little doubt these were in fact prototypes.
