Protecting your Atari ARII

I'm looking at the Centipede schematic package-

It shows P9 having 36VAC input on pins 4 and 5.

It shows P6, pins 1 and 2 as signal ground and pins 3 and 6 as 10.3VDC unregulated.

What happens if you swap them around?

Very BAD things happen when you swap them.

MH: LOL, but it should have been done at the factory.

what ARE you doing? pictures aren't good enough for me, sorry, basic electronic skills only!

Scheisse! :)

Read 2600's response for an understandable version!

What... very bad things?

I ask because... unfortunately... i did this. I swapped cabs... my black widow/gravitar multigame.... from a beat down cabinet to a nicer cabinet. I did not realize the two plugs were the same. I plugged everything in as it "appeared" to go.

I screwed up.

:(

I am now getting power to the PCB... pcb reads 4.98v... but the monitor spot protector stays on and the led lights stay on.

:(

Have I jacked up the ARII somewhere... or worse... did I jack up my PCB? (and likely the multikit as well as it plugs in to the edge connector...)

Take a look at the manual.. See what (2) plugs you swapped and what the voltage for each is.. Then where they go to the pcb.

If your spot killer is on, well.. Your pcb prolly was damaged :(

Possibly the dumbest thing Atari did?

Ahh, sorry, forgot about the Red flybacks fiasco. So the AR2 plugs being the same could be the second dumbest thing

Just as well they got a lot of things right

I did this "mistake" too, and lost an original ESB Board (On the repair pile at present)

Chances are "high" that I am not experience enough to repair this cluster-F...

:(

BTW - Can I plug a BW board in to a Space Duel cabinet for testing purposes?

What does it usually "fry" on the PCB when making that mistake?

It looks like it sends 22v down a rail that it shouldn't....

I did this when I was making a harness for a Tempest. CR1, CR4 fused and the trace to CR4 on top of the ARII board burned. Replaced the diodes and used part of the cut off lead to repair the trace. Didn't have it plugged into a board so I don't know what would have happened to a board plugged into it.

Plugged the BW boardset in to SD cabinet... same thing. Nothing.... solid P1 P2 LED's. Board is jacked. I've had two offers to look at the board and I'm taking up Mikes offer since his multigame is attached.

I'll be shipping it out tomorrow.

Bummer...

One of those things... lesson learned.

DAMN YOU ATARI!

Yeah, I can't tell you how many times I've found AR boards wired incorrectly with blown fuses in the power brick. I've even done it a few times. I feel really stupid when I figure out what I am doing.
