hi there!

everyone around here knows about rusty control panels and what to do to remove the rust and make the panel new and shiny again: sand them down, apply anti-rust primer and then finish it off with the colour of your choice.

what i want to know is if you're applying anything ON TOP of the final colour to protect the panel from being scratched / battered / worn out again, something like a matte clear coat.

what is your take on that?

When I do one, I use a boatload of paint.

The one in the pics I took down to bare metal. 2-3 coats of primer, sanded between each one to get it smooth, and let the primer fill in any scratches.

Then to the color..3-4 coats of color..the first few light, then the last one or two heavier.

NO sanding after that...just 3 coats of clear making sure I get it all on the last coat.

Drying time is the thing here. The paint has to "gas out", and dry. This one took around a week to dry all the way...seriously. It's because the color wasn't fully dried before I shot the clear...helped in making it smooth. When it finally dried, I put it back togeter, and it was durable as heck. I accidentally dropped a nut driver right on it, and it didn't even chip, or scratch it. That, and having a trackball, and being a heavy wear area, it's smooth to the touch...like glass. Should hold up longer than I have the game.

This one gets played alot around here since I did the cp, and not a mark on it. Just wipe off the fingerprints once ina while, and good to go.

A lot of work..took 2 days to do all the work, but the results are great. Thats how I do it anyhow. I've been building model cars and planes for over 20 years now, and I use the same methods on them as I did on this deal.

old vinyl control panel covering---?

How does one redo the old vinyl that has wear on my gyruss game ? anyone remake old vinyl control panels ?

i used clear on the metal control panel for my MAME cabinet. CP was primed several coats and sanded in between each coat. I then sprayed 3 lights coats of satin black paint. Follwed by 3 coats of matte clear coat.

In the end, the clear coat was nice but after being played quite a few times, it started to wear off where yours hands sit. Dont know if it was just crappy clear coat or what. maybe i applied to much or too little.

hmm, that leaves me thinking ...

apply the clear coat to protect the panel with the danger of the clear coat becoming visible

OR

don't apply the clear coat with the danger of the black color wearing off and the anti-rust primer shining through

MORE OPINIONS PLEASE!!!

This one was 2 coats primer, 3 coats Rustoleum Semi Gloss Red, no clear coat:

The game is on location. I checked on it last weekend and I noticed plenty of people (kids) playing it, and no noticeable wear. It's been about 3-4 months.

i'm asking this questions because i have to restore the panel of my wizard of wor and the pac-man panel. both of them have already been stripped down and repainted and both of them will get new overlays, but as you can see those overlays won't be covering the "dangerous" part of the panel where the palm of the hand rests.

i'm afraid that this part of the panel might shown signs of wear eventually and that i'd have to replace the overlays again in the end - which would s***

comments? experiences? field experiments? ;)

I'm in the process of restoring a Pac-man. I don't' plan on putting anything on the panel to protect. A few good coats of paint and it should last for years. Remember, those panels got that way after 20+ years of heavy use. In your home, I don't think you have anything to worry about. And if you have to redo it in 20 years...it will give you something to do in retirement.

Who are you, Frizz? I just gave you the results of a 'field experiment', and several people have given their comments and experiences. WTF more do you want? Prime 2 coats, paint 3, done.
