anyone smart out there looking for a new project?

i want a joust rom hack that will make it act like a modern 2p simultaneous game... someone can start a 1p game (from either side?) and a second player can join in...

now to maintain high score integrity, and a simpler solution, could be that the second player start button (or whichever player isn't playing) can reset the current game and start a 2 player game (each at 0)... but even joining in later at 0 will probably just lower the final high score, but would be harder to implement i'm sure

thoughts?

I've searched for Joust disassemblies periodically, but never turned up anything (except for the 2600 version I believe). It's been on my todo list for awhile though.

Even if adding the ability for a second player to join at anytime isn't feasible, it would be nice (and probably not too difficult) to add a continue feature. It always sucks when you're playing with someone and you/they goof up and die early.

Just set any new game to zero for the player just starting. Won't have any problem with escalated high scores that way. Or do so on a continue.

Go ahead and make it I guess, but I wouldn't buy it or install it.

You would get the same effect that many collectors complain about Gauntlet after they own one.

The continue-fest definitely detracts from the fun, but so does your buddy having nothing to do while you keep playing. Not sure there's a good solution to any of this (other than maybe just balancing the default number of lives).

I don't personally use mods on my games, so this would mainly be an excuse to disassemble Joust.

thanks all for feedback/ideas

true, continue feature has a tendency to break games...

starting simple... play a 1 player game either blue or yellow... ok that'd be nice for no real benefit

while a 1 player game is being played, player 2 can hit start (whichever start button isn't being played)

player 1 finishes his level, and the game asks if you want to finish your 1p game or start over with the challenger (and if so, back to level 1 and 0 points, basically sacrifice your game to start a 2p game)

- or -

player 1 finishes his level, and game asks above ("start over mode") or "join in mode" which starts the next level with both players, but skips any high score saving

this is more of a rewrite than a "hack" it sounds like
