Hi;
I am still working on my Turkey Shoot and with the help of Andre, (AMC Solutions) think that it's narrowed down to the Video Decoder prom, located at IC60 (Video PCB) , labeled: A-5282-10292.(Decoder 5A)

It is a 512 x 8 bi-polar prom (Signetics 82s137, MMI 6349, Harris 7649, etc...)

If anyone can supply me with a good image, I would be ever in your debt and I will compensate you for your time. I am also willing to purchase from you a burned IC if you have the capability to do so, just let me know the cost.

My only other option is to pull the one I have on a Joust II PCB but as I have never tested that board-set, I don't know if that one works either.

Thank you for your help in my never ending project.

Jeff

Send an email to Steph at HobbyRoms.com. I am pretty sure he can burn these for you. He is also a member here on KLOV (username STEPH).

Well, the PROM image is NOT included in MAME... You'll have to find someone with the board that can also read the chip.

Good luck!

This is something I worry about. Not enough people dumping there proms and EPROMs or letting others dump them. Makes it hard to repair games.

If anyone local to me has a board, I'll dump the prom for them so jetusenet can get his board repaired.

Hi;
Andre states that the PROM in my boardset is possibly bad:
"The other one is that I tested the ROMs and PROMS that are need for booting and found that the PROM at location IC60 tested bad. This IC60 is a 7649 prom (not very common) and my reader isn't always compatible on these types of PROMs so I'm not sure if the PROM is bad or my reader is not reading the PROM correctly."

So then I contacted Steph, (great guy) and he also stated that the PROM is not included in MAME but he will provide the service to make copies once I get one.

This is the route I am going to take, unless of course someone can supply me with the PROM image before then........

I am going to test my Joust II board set to make sure there are no errors and everything works as it should, then extract the IC, solder a socket onto the PCB, place the IC back in and test the board set to make sure I did not kill the IC.
Next step will be to send it to Steph who will burn me multiple copies, (posterity sake) and once I receive them, send one to Andre to continue with the troubleshooting.

Then I'll send the image to "2600" (who graciously offered to dump the PROM for me) so he could submit it to the proper repository for others who might need it.

I'll be testing the PCB set hopefully by the end of the weekend and I'll check the thread one last time before I pull the IC. Hopefully someone will have the image before then.

Thanks to all for the help and support in my never ending Turkey Shoot project

Jeff

Step one completed - Joust II boardset tested and working properly.
Next, removal and retesting of the PROM.
Keep fingers crossed!

BTW, once Jeff provides me with the prom, I will make the image available
to the MAME team and to anyone else who might need it (...for free of course ! )

I might also start to host a web page specially to allow download
of hard-to-find images. (...I'm amassed an interesting collection over the years ).

All images will of course be free,
but I can also program the proms or eproms (for a small fee)
for anyone who needs them.

Cheers,
Steph

Sometimes I sooo smart that it actually hurts!

I was worried that I might damage the PROM by the heat of the de-soldering gun so I came up with a plan to gently cut the leads on the IC, (thereby removing possible heat damage from the equation), attach leads to my 20 pin IC test clamp and run those wires to a 20 pin IC socket that would then be plugged into the burner, well.........

I cut 2 leads then .. BOOM! the PROM blew it's top!

I did not take into account the delicate ceramic case, (that was 25 years old to boot) and now it is worthless, except as an example to other "brainiancs" as a do-not-this-happen-to-you lesson.

My only other hope is a non-working TS II video PCB that I just removed the PROM from and inserted it into the working PCB, which I had installed a socket into with the hopes of success.

I'm going to slam a couple of Bacardi 8s' and get some rest. I'll assemble the PCBs' and fire them up tomorrow and hopefully they will work. Then careful removal of the IC and shipment out to Steph.

For all those that do, please say a couple of prayers.
Jeff

Are you sure it's useless ?

It looks like only the plastic top broke off.
The rest of the chip looks OK.

Actually, it looks almost exactly like a UV eprom with the window missing...

Maybe it's still worth trying your eprom clamp trick...

Good luck,
Steph

Then submit it to the Mame team so it'll be distributed.

It won't though. :(
That team is run by a bunch of Nazzis and the odds of you convincing them to do something is extremely slim. I've heard of all subtle bugs found by users that they simply couldn't care less about.

Although the color bug in PO seems so obvious.

That's BS, and there is no reason in spreading rumors. It's hard enough to get people to dump anything. This thread is a perfect example of that. If they think there ROMs won't be distributed then they will have even less motivation. Then how will we repair boards? The MAME team has accepted every dump and patch I've given them except one. I could probably convince them to accept it if I submit it again. MAME is by far the most organized distribution of ROMs and I shudder to think of the alternatives.

Also, what color bug in PO are you talking about? Has it even been reported?

I've never submitted anything to them... but I do have a dump of the 4Mb EPROM version of MK2 that isn't in the archives. It would be nice to have that available for the community at large.

How does one do that?

Steph;
What killed the chip is that when I cut pin #9, it blew through the top, tearing out the trace to the core.
I'm pretty good at soldering but I cannot even see the little wire going to the core. I guess there is somebody out there that could connect the wire but without a couple of drinks, I would not even attempt it......
I am going to keep it just in case but I am hoping that the boardset will function correctly and then we'll be in business....
Fingers crossed.

Both screens in MAME show the same colors when the game boots up.
The colors in the PunchOut logo should be different.

I believe you are using an old version of MAME. That bug was reported and fixed. They were able to fix it it once I scanned the schematics for PO and Arm Wrestling PCBs and uploaded them to arcarc. The BAK board was missing from the schematics floating around previously so they kinda had to guess at the hardware. Schematics are another thing I wish people would help contribute to so that we can keep these boards going.

Let me know if I'm wrong and I'll resubmit the bug, but pretty sure you are just using an older version.
