Project: Wizard of Wor

Alrighty...

So I check my voltages and +5 is at 5.18-5.2 and +12 is 12.85. I adjust down to 5.06-5.08 for the +5 and 12.00 dead on for the +12.... same situation (as expected). I then removed all the boards and re-seated them...started with the RAM and worked my way over. RAM board one... no change. RAM board two... no change. CPU board. Change. Now I get the same vertical stripes on screen but none of the voices are working... the star field is now gone... and the game doesn't coinup or play blind. I continued through the board set removing and reseating. I, of course tried re-seating the CPU board numerous times and I'm now stuck with vertical stripes that flash and nothing much more. When i got to the far left board (the mainboard), after reseating the voice came on screaming "WAAAAAAAAAAAA"...upon re-seating again it went away and went back to the same stripes.

Suggestions?

how's the -5? mine had a low -5 when i got it and displayed a similar issue. i would possibly try reseating the boards again. sometimes they can be reseated and do that, and re-reseating fixes that. maybe make sure all the ram/rom are seated all the way too. after that, i'd probably try to get either another WoW boardset or a Gorf one, and swap out the ram/rom/pattern boards and see what fixes it. and i think spaeth is pretty familiar with these, so you might wanna check with him.

The power connectors for those cages are notorious for cold solder, I've also seen the paper labels come off the ROMs and get stuck in the interconnect board- long shot but it's happened to me.

Have you installed two known working RAM boards and tried it?

There's a ROM you can download from Commander Dave that test the RAM, if you've got a burner handy to burn one.

Another good bet re: the vertical lines, if the RAM boards aren't the culprit, check the pattern board.

Unfortunately I have no ROM burner. I'll check for the label issue... and unfortunately I also have no additional boards handy to stick in the machine. I don't own Gorf.

What is a working WoW boardset go for?

EDIT: Thanks Mike! I checked and sure enough, there was a label stuck in the CPU slot at the bottom. I removed it and I am back to having a starfield, and the game again plays while the graphics are garbage.... it talks...you can hear shots fired, etc....

So... the general consensus is RAM BOARDS or PATTERN BOARD?

The symptoms of pattern and RAM board failures look pretty similar.

One thing you can try easily is to swap the position of the two RAM boards and see if the graphics issue seems to change positions on screen.

If I had to flip a coin, I'd say RAM boards- but post the results of moving them.

I PM'd you about testing your boards, but if you're getting that kind of deal then I'd say go for it.

Anyone that's going to own one of these is going to need spare boards at some point, may as welll stock up now :)

yeah, i'd probably take the boards, make sure they're complete and just swap until you figure out which one was the problem. i've got a spare boardset (don't know if it works, though) and spare amp board for mine just in case.

Nice project and awsume game... Love the gameplay. Try the boards because even if they do not work you can sell them again. The boards for WOW and Gorf have good resell value do to some rare chips on them.. Really the best thing to do is find some one with a working WOW and have them test each board individually to see which one or ones are bad.

Well, I am still in search of a WORKING boardset as I've not heard from the guy I mentioned above.
