After working on several DMD project machines, do you ever have the desire to pick up an early solid state machine for an easy project? This was the case for me a while back when I found a Black Hole. After working on DMDs here lately, I may have the opportunity to aquire an Amazing Spiderman. Is it crazy to desire an older game after favoring the DMD games?

Other than the DMD and maybe toy/ramp specific things on the PF...a DMD game IS an SS game, so I'm not quite sure what you mean here?

I'll always prefer to buy 3 or 4 "SS" games over what "DMD" games cost...more bang for my buck than paying $3k~ for a single game.

I've been on a SS 80s kick lately. Pinbot and Andromeda are a couple I've been working on. There's a lot of great players from the 80s. Games where the objective is so simple, yet so hard to achieve. I find them very challenging, if a game is too easy its not as fun to me. If I'm constantly screaming MOTHERFUCKER at a game chances are its a keeper for me. :p

I don't know that I equate "older SS games" with "easy projects"; I'd say that in many cases they're just as labor intensive, as they're older, and often much filthier, and need more electronics maintenance than the newer DMD games do.

Now - tearing down the playfield is often much easier, as you're often working with single level playfields, or ones with a ramp or two that are easily removed, but I understand what you mean...

I'm with Gonzo otherwise.

Hell - if I had to choose between having *only* DMD pin's, or only older/non-DMD SS pins, I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat.

You find me a spirit at a decent price, and I'll damn well buy it. But that's like trying to get paparazzi pics of big foot at his summer home in Atlantis. ;)

Yep, hard to come by. Such a fun game though, so much going on. 2 ways to start multiball, I would guess its got to be the only pre-DMD game with that feature.

And expensive I bet.

I was just saying. It's not like you don't have expensive stuff...:)

I actually seem to equate early SS games as always being some form of "project," while newer stuff seems to be easy fixes or basically ready to go. It just seems to me you don't have a lot of people having to do massive board work on some DMD equipped WPC game or something.

This ^^^ +1! The machine will kick your butt and abuse you, but you keep coming back for more.

As for the OP, I have to agree with you on that. Can always shop out an early 80's game in a few hours, a DMD, you have work all day.

I wish that were the case with me. Every DMD I've worked on lately has required work on at least 1 or 2 of the boards

Get something cool, like a Gottlieb Spirit. It's early 80's and awesome.

Gottlieb Spirit: Not an easy game to find for sale. Out of the four Sys80 multi-level games that I used to own, Spirit is the one I miss the most.

Do you know where one is for sale?

Start looking in Europe. There has been one listed on and off in NY, but you might get "punked".

I'm on an older ss kick myself. I just picked up an Eightball deluxe and a Haunted House for my pin row. Sometimes I think less is more when it comes to pins.

Not for sale, but I have a relative that has one. He's one of those A list only collector types, with a TZ, TAF, you get the idea.

Not crazy, but a if you're going to mess with a Gottlieb System one, plan to spend a lot of time with a crimper and molex pins.
