I bought a Project Justice naomi cart from another klov'er last week and it arrived today and has me pretty perplexed. Normally I would discuss a problem in pm's with the seller first before thinking about taking it public, but in this case even after much googling I'm not completely positive of what I have, so want to see if anyone in the community can help out, as I am a newb when it comes to Naomi stuff.

When I opened the box today I was immediately alarmed that the label was in japanese. I was expressly looking for the american version of PJ and thought that's what I was buying. I didn't think I was in MVS territory where you have to request pics of the actual cart, but I guess now I know.

So I put the cart in my setup anyway, and the game text turns out to be in english, both on the title screen and throughout the gameplay. However, it seems like certain sounds are missing. I pull up some youtube videos and sure enough, the english announcer's speech is missing ("round 1..fight!" etc), as is the various character speech at the start of each match.

I also notice from the youtube videos that both the american and japanese versions startup screen has "Now Loading Game (31k)" whereas the cart I got has "Now Loading Game (15k)"

So does anyone know what gives? I wasn't aware naomi stuff was bootlegged at all, or is this something else?

There no region specific Naomi carts that I'm aware of. They are all the same. It depends on the bios in your Naomi. If you have a USA bios then all the carts play in English. Bootleg Naomi cart I've never heard of. I would try and test the cart on another Naomi. It could be your bios. I have my Naomi set to 15khz for low Res on my arcade cab and 31khz for my LCD monitor.

what explains the missing speech then? And they are obviously region specific in terms of the labels at least, and apparently there are minor gameplay differences for different games

Is it possible this is a dev Naomi cart? Maybe an early beta/alpha of the game? What part of the country did the cart come from?

Keep in mind, I'm not a Naomi expert at all and I dunno if dev carts of this system are even out there. Just one possible theory if it isn't a bootleg.

I have heard for bootleg MvC2 carts, and as others have said will be region specific to the BIOS you are using, so could be certain regions have different sounds??

run the RAM / ROM test in the test menu. I had a cart mising certain sounds and in the test menu it had one bad chip. The 15k / 31k thing is to do with the resolution of your monitor. You can alter it with dip 1 on the mobo but you don't want to if you have a 15k monitor.

Almost 100% certain it won't be a bootleg. As stated above region is purely down to the bios chip you have int he mobo. Cart code is identical.
