So I was coming around the final corner on my WWF royal rumble when I snapped the head off the bolt that holds the upper playfield and the metal thing that opens and closes up the upper playfield. I cant get this thing off and the lower playfield is filfthy underneath. Does anyone know if this is a 1 off peice specific to this machine or could I get another if I just cut this thing off? Think I'm going to try and JB Weld the head of the bolt back on 1st(Theres a tiny peice still sticking out). But other than that I'm lost.....Trying to attach pic.

So I think the thing were looking at is called the metal ball guide. Have you looked underneath? They're bolted from the bottom. Still not clear as to what the issue is.

Sorry 1st machine

Yeah underneath its attached with an allen head that screws to that guide and holds it and the upper playfield in. I snapped the allen head and I'm stumped. I'll take a pic of the underneath when I get home.

Is the metal guide (The one that moves back and forth) a standard piece? or a one off for this machine.

Is that something I can buy? It's looking like I'm going to have to cut it to get the upper playfield off.

You shouldn't have to cut anything unless you snapped something that allows you to remove it. I think the diverter would be hard to find, you'd have to wait for someone that has a spare or parting out a machine. I'd like to see pictures of what you snapped and see if it can't be drilled out cleanly somehow and repaired.

I think it could be drilled out if I took the hole playfield out. Think I'm gonna try to JB weld the allen head back on, but don't feel like thats gonna work. I cant get a drill in there.

Too late now....but.......if a screw or bolt of any sort on a pinball is seized......someone might have put some thread lock on it. Get the joint good and hot with a heat gun....and usually it will release.

Edward

Thanks

Thanks Ed, I had this thing cleaned and new glass was picked up. I was ready for new boards then POW.....Road block.....

Sucks dude!
I checked all the usual suspects and couldn't find the parts you need (that is, if you cut that diverter out).

Here's the Data East part numbers (for what it's worth)...
Diverter shaft = 530-5288-00
Diverter paddle = 535-6888-00
Diverter paddle/shaft assembly (basically, the two parts above, already riveted together) = 515-6024-00
Diverter assembly (the entire thing...brackets, diverter, coil, everything) = 500-5770-01
Crank arm (this is the thing that the screw broke off of)= 515-5396-00

The best I can tell, the paddle and the shaft are riveted together. I don't know if you could drill out the rivets and separate those two parts, and then slide the rest of the assembly out from the bottom. You could then re-attach the paddle with small screws. I have no idea how this entire assembly is put together, so this might not be possible. I wouldn't cut/drill out anything unless I knew I could get everything put back together. The parts above seem to be hard to come by. I didn't check Pinball Resource, you could give them a call.

You MIGHT get lucky and find Williams parts that will FIT, but this would be no fun feat......and might not be possible. The only other option (which, will not be fun).....call Stern (who used to be Data East pinball) and see if they have changed the part numbers. Maybe there's a modern equivalent (don't hold your breath).....you could also BEG them to look through the warehouse hoping to find some obsolete part (yeah, good luck there).

Also, the best I can tell, Rocky & Bullwinkle uses the same diverter assembly....might help if you're hunting used markets.

Good luck,
Edward

Thanks for taking the time Ed, I tried to drill the rivots out but my bits suck. One option would be to take the entire playfield out then I could get to it to drill it out. But don't think I'd be comfortable doing that.

My advice would be to leave the diverter in the game. If it is filthy underneath it, then try to manually move it out of the way and clean beneath it, with the diverter still in the game. Not a fix, but a work around. Do Not cut the old one without first having the correct replacement parts in your hand (not on order, in your hand).

If you are bent on removing it, then Sears and many other vendors sell screw extractors, which are left hand drill bits on one side and an extractor on the other. Pull the playfield, and properly drill it in a neat and clean fashion that way maybe new threads could be re-tapped and the original parts re-used.

Just my 2 cents.

Can you get some good pics of what's broken and what you are trying to remove / fix? I can not picture it in my mind. Seeing it I may have an idea to remove it, fix it, or remake it.
