Ok. I am hoping to find someone that knows their stuff. I have an afterburner deluxe. I can locate extra main boards, but need the game chips. Seems like I can still buy the chips on the internet. Do I just need to buy an eprom programmer? Also, can I only program the new chips using the old ones, or is there a site that I can download the program to flash on the new chips? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes to burn roms you need a programmer, the physical ROM chips, most likely a UV eraser (to clear the contents of whatever ROMS you buy) and the ROM images, you can find the mame roms for afterburner deluxe. You'll need them to program.

If your missing ROMS and that's all you need it for there are places (hobbyroms.com is one of them) that will burn you roms for a small fee. much cheaper than buying a burner, eprom eraser and ROMS themselves.

though it is fun to have a ROM burner if you have other uses for it.

oh...if you have a full set of chips and are looking to just copy and populate to a set of empty new boards yes, you can read the old chips with a burner and then copy them to new chips, you don't need to download the ROMS.

Ok. I just ordered that programmer. I don't need an eraser to program new chips right?

You will need an eraser unless your roms are new or have been erased.
If you plan on buying used roms on eBay etc... Chances are they are not already erased, unless the seller specifically erases them themselves.

Bingo! and a uv eraser will pay for itself very quickly if you want to update roms you have, or make a mistake and burn the wrong file, or salvage eeproms from dead boards. Mine was under $30 shipped.

My buddy has that Willem and it sucks. It doesn't have pin drivers so
it will often burn chips with an address not making contact or something.
Then he has to erase the chips and try again. He has me burn the
larger chips like 27c800 and 27c322 cause he is sick of messing with it.

You can get DIP Flash and EEprom chips now for decent prices.
Most of the common stuff we need in this hobby is available,
from 28c16 to 29F010 to 27E4096.
They are all fast as hell (45-90ns) and erase in 5 seconds if
you make a mistake.

What are the difference in the programmers on eBay and the one with the website provided above. Besides the price.

Thanks

do some research you can get a larger better higher quality eraser for the same price off ebay or less.

If you want quality, nothing beats Spectroline, but you'll pay through the nose for those erasers. ;)

(Unless you shop around a LOT...)

I have 1 PC-1100 and 2 PC-1100A and between 'em can erase 225 EPROMs at a time. :eek::eek::eek:

Yeah man, I have a spectroline PC-1100A and its a beast. It erases most eproms in 2-3 minutes. I found mine on ebay and got a super nice deal on it.
There are a few smaller model spectroline erasers on ebay for decent prices. Here is one...

If you really want to go hardcore there is a 2200A which is what I have except this one has a larger capacity.

I'm thinking of getting a GQ-4X, UV eraser and the 16 bit converter so I can save some CPS2 boards and work on some of my older boards as well. Are there EPROM equivalents of any/all PROM chips or would I have to buy a separate PROM burner as well?

If you have a computer with a parallel port then that is one of the better ways to go. I have a Needham's EMP-11 and am very happy with it.

Where are these flash/eeprom equivalents available for decent prices?
Like that 28C16, and equivalents for 2732, 2764, ..128, ..256, ..512.
All I find readily available are flash ..010, 020, 040.

I would like to know a bit more about this also.
