So i got my #2 grail in the mail today, numan athletics

It was listed as tested working but yeah right. I plugged her in and bam. Blank blue screen. It doesnt even check ram/rom.

SOOOO...im guessing the processor is bad, at least, thats my educated guess.

Its an mc68000p12, pretty common, but i have none, so my thread is dual pronged

A. Does this sound like an accurate diagnosis?
B. Anyone have one to sell me?

Yes, i know. My voltage seems great everywhere on the board, and one of the solder points on the processor looks questionable to me.

I know it could be a million things, but the board puts out the correct color screen for the boot test but doesn't run it, so im guessing processor

If the caps go bad on the Numan board it prevents it from booting sometimes. I'm guessing it needs a recap anyway. And don't forget the one cap under the rom board.

Bad caps... but the biggest thing on that boardset is reflowing the large custom surface mount chip.

Well i got a new one so i can just solder that right in.
Caps eh? Guess ill do that too.

You seem like youve worked with this board before. Id love to learn from your experience!

I have only ever met one dead 68000 in my repairs and that was because it was in its socket backwards and had been powered up.

I can only recall one and it was damaged by a nasty power surge through the sync line from the monitor.

Funny what happens when a monitor is hooked up without an iso...

I've come across one, internal short and that was a Sunset Riders.

On the Numan boards, I can tell you confidently that it's most likely the caps. I have 2 of them and I've worked on a bunch of Namco System NA1 boards and all the dead ones had bad caps.

Thank you so much! That makes me feel very fuzzy inside!

Btw, you wouldnt happen to have a marquee or say a spare board layin around would ya?

I owned four of them but only one was a full kit, sold that one years ago as I got an offer I couldn't say no to, sorry. The others are working boards but they are in storage as I don't plan on selling them any time soon, so hard to come by now.

Thats cool. This game has been a nightmare to find, and so far i can't even play it lol!
I really appreciate your help. Are ther any other quirks to this board that you know of?

Just be careful not to flex the board. Namco boards of that era had some surface mount chips that were prone to popping legs loose when boards were flexed.

The pesky video boards on the System 11 and 12 boards were the absolute pits for that - those 2 Sony Playstation chips and the RAM they were using are notorious for that.

Neumann Athletics and Namco Classics Vol 1 and 2 were bad for that AND bad for leaking caps.

None of the caps look bloated, cracked, or leaky but ill replace them anyway. If i end up having to reflow the whole damn board ill just spend a whole day soldering if i have to. This stupid board means the whole world to me right now lol.

I think the game is worth it. It's a great fun game, especially with 4 players. If you don't have it yet, get Mach Breakers. I got mine from drkitty in Korea and it's a legit board.

Drat. Like pretty much all of these little 2.2's have a lil corrosion on the solder. I can smell the electrolyte when i put heat to them. I was just checking them out with a magnifying glass. Jeez i dont know if ill ever feel like its good enough lol

ALL the surface mount caps on those boards will leak. If they haven't on yours yet, they will eventually. They are a known problem point.

Replace them all.

Just be careful to not lift the pads off the board. In this case some liquid rosin flux is your friend. It makes it easier to get the solder to melt.

A friend on mine came over when I was desoldering a NA2 board and he thought my daughter took a dump near my work station. The smell of those things are pretty rank when they already leaked out.

Like CM said, use a lot of flux, it makes a huge difference in desoldering and soldering SMD caps.
