So I recently bought an area 51 site 4 arcade game off CL. It powers on and starts up but then at random times itll just reboot and say "keyboard failure." Its never at any certain point in the game, sometimes it happens right away, other times I can play a whole level before it reboots. Im new to these machines with this being my first one so im not sure what to do. I checked all the voltages and they were all correct, so thats really the only thing I know isnt the problem. I thought it was the hard drive but I was told it was recently replaced and that didnt fix the problem. Im guessing pcb board then? Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Your post belongs in the Technical thread below General. You'll get help with your issue allot faster there then in here.

to be honest I really just want to get it running, play with it for a bit, and then sell it to somebody who would appreciate it more. I love sports games, my dream would be to have nba jam TE and maybe even nfl blitz. My 3 favorite arcade games of all time are nba jam, battletoads, and the simpsons. I would never play anything else if the arcade I was in had those as a kid!

Chances are its the watchdog circuit and I've heard of it happening. On the boardset there's a small plug with a pair of wires that connects one board to the other. Just unplug one side and leave it unplugged and see if that helps. Also on your voltages you may want to set it a hair above 5v, like 5.1. Do not set it very high like 5.5v as that big Actel chip in the middle doesn't like that and is expensive to replace.

Enjoy!

Ok so I tried that, still said keyboard error and there was no sound, just a loud humming through the speakers. BUT, the game started running and playing but then cut to a control menu that ive never even seen before. It had options to test the monitor, guns, control panel, etc. I was trying to run some of the tests and then it rebooted again back to the loading screen and said keyboard error. You know though I feel like maybe theres some progress now.. any more advice?

Ok with that unplugged if its still rebooting you have some other problem. Check the CPU fan on the computer half (under the hard drive). If the CPU fan isn't running thats prob your rebooting problem. Its a standard 486 fan I believe.

im gonna respond in the proper thread, sorry about posting here in the first place!

It sounds like it might be a low voltage problem .Check your voltage coming from the power supply .I have a golden tee 2004 and if the voltage is slightly low it will do the reboot like you said yours is doing.Sometimes i can play a few holes and sometimes it does it right away. After a slight adjustment its all good.I hope its as easy as that .PEACE!!!!

The voltage was actually the first thing I checked, all fine. When it reboots its really not even like it turns off, it just takes me right back to the loading screen and among all the other stuff it says while loading it always says "keyboard failure"
