Problem with the lighting of the Cherry player start buttons in a 60 in 1. HELP!

So, I am trying to hook up some cherry lighted switches (like on Asteroids, Centipede ...) for the player start buttons. I got them to work except for the light part. I assumed I could just run 5 VDC and the ground up to the matching plugs on the switch and I would be golden but they are not working. I have gone through a few switches and have only briefly gotten them to light up. Am I doing something wrong???

Are you using LED switches? If so, you are probably burning them out without current limiting resistors.

Do they light up pretty decent the first time or two you turn them on, then never again?

Another possibility is that they are expecting 3.3v or 12v. Feeding 5v to a 3.3 light will burn it out, and feeding 5v to a 12v light will make it glow very dimly, if at all.

I found this thread:

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=20000&highlight=cherry+switches

"The 2 parallel lugs are for the LED (+5v and GND). If you hook it up backwards, no damage done. It just won't light. Remember to use a current limiting resistor (if not already there). I think its a 330 Ohm."

Hooked up a 330 Ohm resistor in line with the 5V and that seamed to do the trick! I'll do a final wiring in the AM and post results.

Did the final wiring today. Grabbed 5 VDC directly from power supply, put a 330 Ohm resistor in line with the 5V input for each cherry switch and they are staying lit! I like it but damn it would be nice if the lights blinked like Centipede does. Oh well, working good now!
