I have a Gottlieb Roller Coaster that I *thought* was nearly completely finished. It's my first project pin and over the last two months I've fixed it from completely non-working to being a fun machine. The pin has a unique element in the middle of the playfield -- a pointer score wheel. When the ball hits this arrow it scores the number that the arrow stops on. There are also playfield scores that give you that value. Info on the pinball can be found here: http://ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2002

Everything was working fine except that I had a relay hum in the 'Tracking Control Relay.' It seems this is an uncommon relay and my guess is that it's linked to the pointer score directly. I desoldered the old coil and soldered the new one. I had to change the Tilt Relay coil at the same time.

Well, the hum is gone, but now when the pointer score arrow is hit the machine begins to consistently add 50 points every second. There doesn't seem to be an ending to the cycle. I let it roll over from 10000 and cut the power for fear of damage to the score reels or a coil. The rest of the playfield scores properly -- including when the machine should score the pointer wheel value. It's only when the arrow is hit that it starts rat-a-tat-tatting +50's from that point on. The ball will also not kick out while that is happening if it has drained.

Any ideas? Could this be caused by a magnetized activator plate on the Tracking Control Relay? The coil itself? It's brand new coil and has worked in another relay and it seems to consistently be activated when game is in play.

I've checked all the guides but they don't seem to cover extra relays like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated and would move this pin from my 'project' column to 'complete.'

Ok, found out the problem. The relay wasn't pulling back far enough to close the final open switch and therefore kept running. A small adjustment on the switch made sure it made contact when magnetized and stop the infinite 50's from scoring.

Checked off the 'project' list (for now - heh).

Well, that didn't last long. Running final tests and notice that during a two player game the score reel will give the second player an extra 1,000 when it begins their 4th ball. Doesn't seem to do this if the score is in the 100's, but if they have a score of 1,xxx or 2,xxx at the end of their 3rd ball it will increase by 1k at the beginning of the next turn.

Very weird and I hope someone can help or has some advise. Otherwise it's just me in a thread talking to myself.

Look at the 2 player 100's score drum for proper adjustment of the points that would tell it "we have scored 900 points and need to ROLL IT OVER and step the 1000 drum" you could find them to close and giving it a extra pulse also check to see if you turn the Game off when on the second player if steps, that would be a different problem.
