I'm having a problem with my spirit of 76. I picked this game up a couple of months ago and everything was working fine. Unfortunately, there is now a problem that I can not figure out. I have looked online for answers but I don't have a lot of experience with EM machines so I don't think I've found anything that will help.

Here is the problem:

When I power on the machine, I press the start button once. This particular machine was rigged for free play by the former owner so I press the start button once for 1 player, twice for 2 player, etc. I don't think this is part of the problem, but I thought it may be helpful info. When I start a one player game, the first ball is fine. Points score correctly, etc. After I lose the first ball, the machine goes to the player 2 score reel. after ball 2 the machine goes to the 3rd score reel and so on. after ball 4, none of the score reels are tallying score and the game never ends.

Is this a common problem with these machines? I am hoping someone can help me figure this out.

not sure but

i think you may have a stepper unit problem.just make sure there moving freely.im not very good with e-ms but i have owned a few. 90 percent of my problems were with stepper units when repairing my machinces.

Sounds like your player count unit or your ball count unit may need going through. It's not recognizing that it needs to go back to Player 1.

Does it play fine in a one player game?

When it advances to Player 2, does it say Ball 1 or Ball 2? when it goes to Player 3, does it say Ball 2 or Ball 3?

Gottlieb games of that vintage had that troublesome "Player Unit" stepper assembly. The switch adjustments on it are important. Be sure to look closely at the step up arms on that unit that engage the gear teeth. Quite frequently the arm's pawl gets a groove/slot worn in it and it can't properly spin the gear.

when it advances to player 2 it is ball 2, player 3 ball 3,
etc...

thanks everyone for pointing me in the general direction. I will probably try to get it worked out this weekend If i can figure it out.

I'm having this issue with a Surf Champ. I'm looking at taking a baseball bat to it.

1 player, 3 ball game: ball 1, player one on the player one bank of reels; ball 2, player one on the player two bank of reels; ball 3, player one on the player three bank of reels. Game over.

4 player, 3 ball game: ball 1 & 2 for all players score properly, game ends after ball 3 on player 1.

So far I've cleaned the rivets & shoes on the Player Unit and Coin Unit and still have the same problem.

It's also scoring too many points on player 2 (500 point switch scores 4500). Scoring is fine on the other players. May be related? Score motor issue? Dude without a schematic issue?
