Problem burning ROM for Star Wars

I picked up a Batronix programmer and I'm trying to burn the rom for 1L on the AVG board. It had a 2732 in it which I erased and now every time I try to program it I keep getting an error. It reads error at 0/00 expected 1Eh and read FFh but a blank chip will always read all FF. I also tried 3 brand new chips from arcadeshop and they all do the exact same thing. I've also tried 3 different sources for the ROM image. Any ideas?
 
Can the programmer supply the necessary programming voltage for a 2732? (25v) Many newer ones can't, or require additional hardware (power supply, switch setting, etc) to do so.

It should program no matter what - corrupt ROM file or not. It doesn't care what it writes on the chip. I usually try to program a chip full of zeroes as a test.

Can you program newer chips? Try a 27256 or something that uses a 21v VPP.

The burner I have (different brand) does the same thing, only with 2716's. I can blank them, they verify blank, but they give me an error when I try to burn one. 2732's (and 2532's using an adapter) seem to burn just fine.

I have burnt 27512's but no 27256's. On their website it lists the chips are able to be burnt with no adapter and that it should have ample voltage. Worst case I'll have somebody burn a couple for me. Just frustrating as hell since I bought what was supposed to be better then an eBay junker and run into this.

Woah - only SOME 27256s need 21V, other 27256s need 12v ish, (AMD chopped and changed at a lot) always check the programmer is going to give the Prog voltage the chip needs, if not you risk destroying the chip.

The most likely cause for the original posters problem is that he is not using the external power supply that USB programmers need when actually programming chips. The USB standard can only provide 5v at fairly low current. To generate the higher voltages for the programming you almost always need to use the external power supply. The GUI on these things never seem to tell you that tho, just that programming keeps failing. In rare cases it will program without the PSU but it will be incredibly slow, usually it will fail at the 1st byte read back stage.

They don't even offer an external adapter, only a powered USB hub which I already have. I think I may just send it back and look into a different one. I sent them an email to see what they have to say, but I'm sure it's a voltage issue as well.

Check out the GQ4X from mcumall. External power adapter ready... no issues here.

Well that might be the case, however not all USB ports are created equal, I think there have been a number of revisions to the USB format when it comes to current levels, if you are not on a modern grunty port, or on the end of a cheap USB hub then that would cause problems.

If the programmer has a power input I would use it to rule it out.

I agree that its a power issue too. Like mentioned in the above post, not all usb ports will provide enough power. As a general rule and usb ports on the front of the pc are not desirable for something that is power hungry like a programmer. If your using a front port give it a try on one of the rear ports. If your programmer has a jack for external power I would use it.
 
The programmer doesn't have an input for an external supply otherwise I'd give it a try. Batronix tech support emailed me back and said they tried a NEC D2732A and they were able to get it to program. They want me to send them my TI chip to test and verify to correct the problem.

Well, the 'A' programs at 21v and the standard 2732 programs at 25v so that really doesnt prove anything. Your mileage will be hit or miss on the older chips without external power.
 
I fixed my problem the easy way and ordered the GQ-4X. I'm still going to send a chip to batronix to have them figure it out thought. When I get a minute I'm going to try and read out the voltages on the programmer while it's trying to burn.
 
Ok. So I got my GQ-4X in the mail today. Went and bought a 9v 300ma adapter. Got home, installed and loaded up the rom. Started to program and ........ Write failed!! Same error, address 0x0000000, buffer=0x1e device=0xFF. Not enough amps, bad chips(4 of them?), I'm a moron?!? Can't figure it out.
 
Did you do the blank check first? See if it is blank? Is it just a 2732 or are there any other markings on it? mbm2732a? etc?

Do you have a 2764 you can burn?

Did a blank check on all chip. All came up clean. I also read them all into the hex editor and verified they read all FF. I have a MBM2732A-25, this is the chip that came out of the board originally. The chips I bought are TMS2732A-25JL's.
 
that is weird. Try to slow down your burn speed.
Do you have any 2764/27128/27256 chips that you can burn the image too?

for giggle. try blank checking right before you burn.

Image burns fine to a 2764. Just can't get it onto a 2732. The other weird thing is the star wars manual lists chip 1L as a ROM chip with a part number and not an EPROM number like the rest of the ic's.
 
copy the 2732 image and paste it to the end of the original image and burn that to the 2764. If you want to send me one of the 2732s I can check it in my GQ4x.
