priming a cabinet

How many coats of primer should i apply to a cabinet and should I sand the cabinet if i do have to apply a second coat of primer?

Sand smooth before priming, 2 coats and yes, sand between them. Primer tends to be thick, and is where most of the orange peel comes from when rolling.

I have sand smooth the cabinet before priming and have applied the first coat of primer, is 220 grit okay to use and should I sand by hand or use my orbital sander? Just a lite sanding? I did notice that after the one coat there is a orange peel look with the primer. Also to do the corners is it better to use a foam brush or a regular type brush? First coat of primer I used a reguler brush but it left some brush marks.

I use those cheap "throw-away" foam brushes for the edge work. I just kind of blot the paint on with them and that way they don't leave streaks in the paint.

I use my orbital for in-between-coat sanding. Just do it as lightly as necessary. And make sure you get rid of the orange peel in the primer before painting over it, or it will more than likely show through in the paint.

Look at the back of the sandpaper packaging and there's probably a rough guide. I use 320 grit to sand the primer. Thing is, you want to fill imperfections, create a base for the finish to adhere to and get it as flat as possible.

When you're satisfied with your final primer coat, if you haven't sanded it, use a grey 3M scuff pad to break up the gloss. It will ensure that the finish is able to 'bite' to the primer. Google some basic techniques for auto body. It's all about 'slick' and getting the surface very flat before shooting the paint or clear.
