Guys: I'm in a predicament. A good friend needs his Primal Rage fixed pretty much overnight. I spent a little time on it today but it is a mess. I'm extremely limited on time but told him I would see what I could do.

BTW Happy Fourth of July all of you. Nice fireworks show tonight as seen from my home. Anyway, back to my predicament.

It was originally a Rolling Thunder converted (poorly) to Primal Rage, then NBA Jam, then back to Primal rage. I have picture but no audio. Wiring is a mess. From what I can tell, there are two/three hookups in the cabinet. There is the standard jamma connection and one other connection that connects next to the jamma connnector at JXPWR. All voltages are good. I was told that in its original configuration as Primal Rage, the sound worked. I see another connector just above JXPWR that has the same inputs. (JMPWR) However, there is no connector present in the machine so it is either not needed in this configuration or it is missing completely. The game has a switcher wired in but no evidence of having two of those connectors.

My questions are these:

1> Do I need to wire in another connector just like JXPWR to JMPWR in order to get sound out of this machine?

2. There is an audio out at JAUD, is this where the speakers get their sound or from the speaker outputs on the main jamma connector?

3. There is only one speaker in this machine. Which set of outputs should I wire up to it. I have not tested the speaker to see if it is bad yet or not. Ran out of time. I have about 45 minutes tomorrow to work on this so any assistance ya'll can give me would be very much appreciated.

I just don't have the time to go thru all of this material tonight. I'm running on limited sleep and need to get some rest tonight for a very busy tomorrow.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Pretty sure primal is standard jamma. It uses the start and 3 buttons for the each players 4 buttons.

Pretty sure audio passes thru the jamma connector. The top board has an audio connection But I think its only for the subwoofer. But then there looks like 6 wires are going to that connector..

I think all JAMMA games give the option of mono audio through the JAMMA harness. only time they'll have stereo audio is through extra wires on the JAMMA harness itself, or another header on the game's board (or perhaps sound board).

you select between them in the test menu generally, I've seen a lot of games I've played on MAME giving the option of Mono or Stereo audio -- Mono will default to the JAMMA wiring, Stereo will use the extra header. alternately speaking, I think most games that are stereo-capable have RCA outputs for the audio, meaning they require an amp.

that said, I swore Primal Rage was a mono game, meaning it would just use JAMMA. I never saw an arcade board for it though, but if the extra audio connector is only for the sub, then that makes a lot of sense. :)

That's very good to know. I've got a sound issue with a Time Killers board this might solve. But then again, because it features stereo sound that adjusts to character position on the screen.

Since the game's out of sync, i bet it's givin' that positional audio some hell...
