What would be a fair price on a very nice example of a Stern Spiderman pinball from the original mfg run? Perhaps a little wear and tear, but not much (nothing offensive).

I've been going back and forth about whether I want to buy one or not, and I have a line on one.. the guy wants $4K for it, has LED's, some other minor upgrades, and appears to be HUO. The shooter lane where the ball ejects out and hits the wood (then drops to the shooter) is a little eaten up also. Other than that, looks good.

Just looking for opinions on this one..

Thanks

Spiderman is a game that is increasing in value. $3500 would be top dollar I'd personally pay for a HUO. Of course less is always better ;)

Word on the street is Stern is offering another batch of SM's. Maybe consider a NIB then?

It is the game I'm saving up for right now. I can't justify NIB any more. They want too much. I'll be looking for a routed Spidey near tax time. As far as price on the HUO example above, I'd try for the 3200 to 3500 range. That wear should make the price lower.

Aside from the shooter lane, Stern games really don't wear...not only are they newer, but they actually put on a pretty decent clearcoat at the factory. A dirty routed Spidey might need a little work to look clean and shiny, but when you're done with it - it might just look and play like a HUO or NIB!

Any thought on original SM machine prices going down if another run goes through?

3 words for you
The Addams Family

Prices didn't go down when they released the gold edition. Over 10K production runs of the original and it keeps going up value. History shows if a game is good it doesn't matter how many are made, it'll keep going up in price. Although having a crap economy will slow the increase.

Nope. Spidey is one of the most in-demand Sterns....and each small run of new ones keeps going UP in price. Word is they're doing 50 more this month and then the license is gone. Same thing happened w/ the last batch of TSPP (last year, I think) ....quick run of 50 before they lost the license.

Man, I got a screaming deal on mine because of how I acquired it. I got a tip that a local distributor was getting one back that was on route briefly but the location had closed. They did a sort of under the table deal where they sold it to me without putting it into inventory yet so they didn't mark it up at all and I made it a cash payment. I think they probably just split the profit among them and never told the owner.

In the end up headed home with a gorgeous Spider-Man for $2,400 out the door. All I would have to have done was Windex the glass and wipe down the playfield and I could have resold it for $1,000 more. It looks HUO, but I don't want to sell it. I was on the hunt for the game for a good year checking daily for one and even had several deals fall through when sellers backed out.

We officially hate you, now. :) Great price. I'll buy 2 at that deal.

It'd be tough to find a HUO Spiderman for much under $4k, anything under $3750 and they sell pretty quickly. New ones are $4800, not worth it to buy a new one. From past experience, if you really want the game, you're better to grab it then. It could be a year or two before you get another chance.

This is an interesting subject, especially since I've seen people picking up NIB Ironman's and Avatar's for just under $4K. If it was me and I had $4K cash to spend, I'd have to ask myself if I wanted a NIB Ironman or a used Spiderman pin. $4K for a used SM still seems a little high to me also, Stern is doing another run of this pin and while they are being advertised for $4800, I'm sure if you search around you could pick one up for just over $4K NIB. If that's the case, $4K for a used one just doesn't seem reasonable.

Also, you can get a lot of nice older pins (non Stern) for that price, perhaps even 2, so I'd be considering that for the cash also.

Spiderman IS the number one stern game right now. TSSP and LOTR are hot as well, but word has it that SM will become the next MM, especially having a run of probably less than half what MM was, but whatever the case, it will be a lot less. If you have the chance, buy one. I know I am. Expect to pay ateast $3300-4000 for a spiderman. Not many are popping up for sale, and it probably won't get better.

Thanks, James

Hi. Markets hot for these - being an owner i always like to keep a pulse on it (its fun). HUO examples selling for 3800 - 4200 range. Its worth it. If you find one for less than that - snap it up. The demand keeps growing. Its crazy watching it from the sidelines - i remember two years back they were common and sat for a bit.

Not my auction - but keep watch here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220712540403&viewitem=. Love to see what it ends at.

Distributors are selling the NIB "older stock" for 5k range - since they seem to go very fast, good selling pins.

Good luck in searching - by the way, as good as SM is - dont overlook IM. Just as good IMO.

spidy

i have a huo red spiderman with about 1000 plays in perfect shape not a scratch on it in reno nv for 4100 firm

The reason NIB SM's are closer to 5k is because Stern charges more for machines that are being rerun. The machines that are currently in production are usually closer to 4k. So I wouldn't look at what IM and Avatar are selling for and think you will be able to find a SM for the same price.

I got lucky with mine last year and found one from 2007 that the guy never opened and I paid about what the new Sterns are going for.

Not trying to sound rude here but I don't believe Spidey will ever join the ranks of TSPP or LOTR. And the only way that thing would make MM status is if Stern closed their doors and even then I'd highly doubt it.
Spidey is a great game, but I really doubt we're looking at it reaching the TOP ten list. Hell there's only one Stern on the top 10 list currently and the rest are B/W.
B/W dead - Stern still alive. I see a trend there ;)

What do you mean "don't believe Spidey will ever join the ranks of TSPP or LOTR"? It already has, it's already more expensive than either of those games in the used market. Better ruleset than those games? No, but it's not like MM has a killer ruleset either, and it's in the top ten. Also depends on which top ten you look at. If you look at the yearly top ten that's voted on here:

http://www.treasure-cove.net/TOP50.htm

There are 3 Sterns in the top 10, and Spiderman is number 5. Ironically, 3 of the games in the top 5 have very similar rulesets (SM, AFM, and MM). I don't think SM would ever get as high as MM though, even if Stern closed their doors, unless even more crazy money pours into the hobby (which is why I think MM has just skyrocketed recently, rich guys with lots of money are going for it right off the bat because they've read "it's the one to have").

I was referring to IPDB's top 10 simply because it's a collection/poll world wide and not RGP focused like Treasure coves. I don't feel price should be a factor because most new games prices are just as much if not more than a lot of the top 10. Clearly one of the arguments of all times is that MM isn't worth XXX amount of dollars.
Let me take nothing away from Spidey as it's a great game. I just don't see it reaching the all time greatness list that currently most B/W titles games occupy. Time will tell the tale of course. MM hasn't sky rocketed recently, but rather steadily gained value over the last few years. But the whole "Rich guys - machine to have" I don't understand that mind set at all. Simply because a MM can be had for ~$6K to $8K. A person could either have 3-4 $2K games or 2 - $4K games .... you get the point.
How many pinheads buy NIB's? They could simply buy one MM instead of 2 NIBs. Most hard core pinheads can afford a MM, they choose not to.
I could buy one if I wanted to, but I'd personally much rather have several more additions to my current line up instead of just one addition.
