Hey Guys,
I may have an opportunity to pick up a Paperboy. Its currently non working. A friend has it, and I was curious what they go for complete non working and working as I figure I can get it going, but I don't know what it will cost to do so. Currently, I know it has a bad 19K7600 Wells monitor. Not sure about the pcb, but it isn't making any sounds except for a bit of crackling every now and then. But it could be bad speakers or part of the AR-II is out. I have diagnosed almost nothing on it so far. The only reason I know the monitor is out is that it has no glow on the neck of the tube. So what do you think. Working and Non....whats it worth. And is it worth my time to pick it up.

If it doent play blind I would offer $100-$150 depending on condition...

If you could get it for $150 or less that's a very good deal even in the condition it's in. There is a good chance the monitor just needs repair not replacement.

I see Paperboy working for $500-$600 around here, sometimes more if it's really nice.

Paperboy is a pretty awesome game, I know a lot of collectors are looking for the handle bars, so there could be some salvage value there if you can't get it to work. Sounds like there may be multiple issues at work, $150 seems fair, but it'd be worth more if you can get it to work

Doesn't sound to bad. But the monitor if truly un repairable is a bitch to find. It's a med res monitor that isn't as easy to find as a g07 more like a wells 6100 not impossible but harder.

As much as it would pain me to do so, I would probably just go with a cheap tri sync LCD for about a hundred bucks. That is if I couldn't get it working first.

I'd say $100 non working and up to $500 working and in nice physical condition. If the guy's a friend and you want to look deeper and confirm that the monitor works or that the game plays blind which means the board is at least partially working then you could be nice and offer more based on that info. Just keep in mind that boards for paperboy don't generally sell dirt cheap, med res monitors are not readily available and once again can cost a pretty penny and usually paper boys at least need the handle bar control rebuilt to make it playable as most are pretty sloppy from years of play without maintenance. If you decide to replace artwork you will be into it another $250 or more.

There is nothing on the chassis that cant be repaired and the tubes are standard res common CRT's should that be the problem. As long as there is a monitor in the cab don't worry about it.

I read they are a finer dot pitch CRT, but it seems people never agree on this.

No matter what, all you need is the chassis (repairable) and the original yoke and you can swap in a TV tube whatever the dot pitch. Even if not as sharp, it would still look amazing compared to an LCD or super burned tube.

I have a Paperboy and the tube is a monitor-type (fine pitch) tube, in fact it's the same tube as used in an Amplifone (M48AAWOOX). Makes sense since the game is a medium res (640x512 / 25KHz) game. I've been wanting to see how it looked on an LCD (maybe not so bad if I can get a 19" LCD that's an even multiple like 1280x1024 or 1920x1536).

As for fixing it, there are a lot of socketed chips, and the connector between the two board. clean them all, check the +5v at the board coming from the switcher, and you may be pleasantly surprised. I get static / no sound on mine too because of a dirty volume pot I haven't replaced yet. Good luck!

I play cards here Friday nights. I had the auction last Friday, and I just got it opened up like that Monday. I only diagnosed it had no glow on the neck. Its not playing blind or I would have sound, assuming the 12 volts on the AR-2 is working. I hope to get in there and test the power supply, 120 to the monitor, and figure out why there is a switching power supply and if the pcb actually has 5 volts going to it. I may pull the monitor chassis but I have a feeling the owner doesn't want to pay to fix it. We'll just have to see. Its one of those situations that I know I can can get it running if I put enough money into it, but I doubt the owner would. So if I fix it, it would probably be pro-boner work. He'd end up with a game he could sell for 600 and I'd get the boner.
