I have an original 60 GB PS3 that I upgraded to a 500 GB Hard drive. Works perfect, but the system fan is kinda loud.

I honestly don't play it that often and was wondering what they typically go for. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: Just to Clarify, this is the original launch model with Full PS2/ PS1 backwards compatibility.

What version of firmware is on it? Some people search for the one's before 3.55 for the "jailbreak" scene. Other then that I'm not sure the worth of them offhand, I rarely even use mine, besides streaming video's from pc to tv.

It has the latest firmware (think it came out last week). So you can not install Linux on it.

Like Fred stated, it's depending on the firmware. If it's pre-3.56, you have a mini goldmine on your hands, as I've seen backwards-compatible jailbreakable "fat" PS3s go for as much as $600-$700 on eBay. That's not the Buy-It-Now price, that's what the bids got up to when it ended. If it's been updated recently, then you have a $150 at most PS3, if it has a controller and cords.

That sucks. :-(

yeah I had a 3.55 backwards with 500gb and traded it (but was basically $500 cash value) never used it, so figured was worth outing in the end, sadly the phat with latest isnt too high demand as might as well get a slim for less :(

Is it also because the newer firmware upgrades now block people from viewing bootlegged movies? Man, not that I'm a supporter of pirated films.. But one or two come my way on occasion.. And my ps3 won't allow them

Nah, it has to do with that Cinavia bullshit that mutes the audio channel for about five minutes before giving you a Tsk Tsk onscreen message telling you you're a naughty pirate.

F*ck Sony. I'm going back to oldschool systems after the next-gen consoles are released.

so even if you rip your own movies, and have the disc in the drive you still cant watch it via mkv? yeah sony sucks

Apparently if you rip your own movies to mkv it might not work, try mp4.

Why they would do a disc check is beyond me, then again if you have the disk in the drive why play the mkv file ?

divx and mp4 are natively supported. mkv - not so much, need to get a media player to transcode to a mpeg2 stream.

the biggest issue with the new firmware is that you can not jailbreak and you can not downgrade. Even if there was a 3.76 of something firmware you had a hope of downgrading.

if you jailbreak you only were able to play bootlegs and copy games to a disk drive. then there was some fancyness where you could go online using a spoofed PSN server (you use a local DNS server to say that the PSN servers are some other machine than the real ones) and then you could get online.. but I don't even think that works anymore.

It's my understanding that there are a few ways to "downgrade" but it involves an E3 flasher and some other items.

There was also a way to get back online with custom firmware just a bit ago, not sure if it's still working or not?

The only way I know of to watch .mkv files on the ps3 is to stream them. I use PS3 Media Server myself and it works great. The only problem with streaming mkv files thou is you have a hard time skipping forward/backward etc. If you just let it play, then it's great.

Hmm so do these really go for that much now? I have an 80gb Backwards Compatable version on 3.55 CFW with cinivia disabled. I really only used it for PS3 media server but now I use Plex media server with my Roku box so the PS3 just collects dust. Might have to test the waters on Ebay.

I admit the biggest thing I got out of this thread was that the PS3 orignally came with backwards compatibility for PS 1 and 2 (thought it was just 2 for some reason). I wish they would have kept that in there because now I have to hang onto my PS2 to play my old games.

SON OV A!!! I just busted out my old 80gig fat PS3 the other day and upgraded firmware. Hasn't been upgraded for like 2 years because i got a slim and tucked the fat boy away. Now I'm pissed.

I just dug out my daughters old 40GB system and its still on firmware 3.50! I've got a jailbroken launch day 60GB and a 160GB slim on the newest firmware. I always keep the dust blown out of my system and it's never failed me.

I hadn't upgraded in a long time myself, but I couldn't play Arkahm City without upgrading a few months ago. Good to know I cost myself quite a bit of scratch :\.

I rarely play console games anymore and considering I still have nearly every system purchased since childhood I think the PS3 is the last system I'll ever buy for myself.

The cool thing about the backwards compatible 60 gig is that it's actually running PS1/PS2 hardware. The other "backwards compatible" PS3s (20 gig, 40 gig, 80 gig) only run emulators and don't work as well. After a while Sony ditched the backwards compatibility all together. The 60 gig is the only one with the real hardware backwards compatibility.

I've been playing the new Pinball Arcade games on mine lately (Arabian Nights, Theater of Magic, Midevil Madness, Funhouse, etc.) It's pretty damn fun.
