Interesting, please post a ton of pics of this.. I have some cabinet scratch builds to do myself. What did you cut the new side panel out of? Are you planning on applying black vinyl to the inner sides? What's your plan for aligning/attaching the new blocking?

My plan...

Its melamine... black on both sides. I will be applying white BIN primer to the outside panel after lightly sand to take the sheen off and this will be the base for the artwork. I don't want to apply the art right on the melamine as it is very glossy and a little textured so it will not ahere well. Additionally, I have a feeling that the black of the melamine will be too much of a contrast for the white vinyl... I could be wrong but I want to be sure I'm not.

As far as the blocking... I've kept the originals in place on the original panel. I'm going to create a cardboard (posterboard to be precise) mask using the original and create a "stencil" for the blocking...

Jury's out on my method... but I will update with plenty of pics as I go.

I agree on the melamine/primer. Although I could see the art sticking to it, it definitely would make the art appear darker. I would use the white primer, then sand it very flat. That should work really well for the vinyl application.

Makes sense on the blocking. Without the factory jigs, you gotta improvise. That sounds like a good plan.

I like what you are doing. I've done this with a couple of cabs that were just too far gone and either had no art or had repros available. I've also done the save the art and restore the cab around it method but much prefer to cut a whole new cab. Nice job.

I'm amazed that you are putting this effort into a PP. Fun game but wow....that's a lot of work. I'll enjoy watching it come together.

I see so many Pole Positions getting parted out ... honestly I can understand why... boards are burned, cabs are shot... the whole design of it was poo from the beginning. So I kind of feel bad for the game. I thought it was amazing in 82 and still love the ambiance and sound of a working Pole Position in the game room.

I'm holding out hope for a Pole Position clone one day...

How cool would a board be that supports PP and PPII plus other driving games? Then all we need is a JAMMA to PP adapter to put it in our cabs. One can dream.....

Almost done building!!!!

Started to assemble... got most of it finished... made a couple of goofs... nothing visible though.

I used poster board to create a template for the blocking... it worked well enough... something a little more rigid may have been easier to deal with.

I counter sunk every piece of blocking... not only did I staple I also screwed each piece:

Fit well in the template:

Putting down the blocking...

more crap...

It fit PERFECT...

I used the base panels and the monitor panels as my starting point... I anchored them onto the side on the floor then I brought the other side into place on top of it... the tricky part was gluing it... (hot poly glue is really runny)

Dash supports. These were kind of neat. I was worried I didn't take enough measurements / notes to do this right because the old ones got f'd up during removal...

however, like the floor.. it came out perfect!

I put the dash mold in place to see how it fit....all I can say is thank goodness!!!!

Fit perfect, each of the holes lined up with the cross member that was pre drilled weeks ago!!!

Here is the rear top... nothing fancy...

Couldn't resist putting the card cage in there... I've decided its getting powder coated. I'm going to cut some fan holes into it prior to powder coating so it will look really nice... Haven't decided on color yet

Holy shit! That is sah-weet! And it seems you did it rather quick. Love the perfectly routed speaker cover mounts. Love the perfectly routed everything. Amazing work and a true inspiration right there sir.

I love these major restores and the talent it takes to do them. This section has really made me step up my game on getting my projects done.

Man thats looking really good. Gonna be great when it's done.

Quick question - do you get your powder coating done locally or do you send it out somewhere?

Thanks! I really can't wait to get back to this... I'm working on the game room and shopping out my pins at the moment... hopefully in a couple of weeks I can put the finishing touches on the cab and at least get the shell into the game room.

For powder coating... I have a couple of local guys I can use.
