All,

After a lively and very informative discussion about JAMMA harness recommendations http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=375089 , I'd like to discuss power supplies for a JAMMA cabinet.

I've seen the Chinese imports that sell for about $15.00. My question is, what is the best JAMMA cabinet power supply to buy?

I am not trying to save a couple bucks, if fact quite the opposite. I am willing to pay for quality and not save a few bucks on the Chinese import JAMMA power supply.

I'm willing to buy used and I've seen some that look like computer power supplies with Molex connectors and cooling fans.

Any thoughts,
Andy

Need a bit more info from you. Do you need the -5 voltage? What is the expected current draw? Is there any odd voltage needed? Does game board need a reset circuit?

Billhollandcomputers on eBay is good for them standard switching supplies. The one with -5 has lower current than one without the -5. Really fast shipping. I prefer linear power supplies but switchers are cheap and disposable.

What game(s) are we thinking of?

The game you want to run also comes into account for power supply size.

If you need less than 2amp on the 12v rail and 10amp on the 5v rail, you don't need a big power supply.

Other games were built off of old motherboards and require lots of power or even 3.3v (sega model 3 for example).

Multi purpose cabinet

I am building a multi purpose cabinet. Right now my main focus is running PCBs. I have about 10 now and hope to acquire about 10 more. I also have an ArcadeSD and hope to get a JROK Multi Williams but I know those can be powered by rubbing 2 sticks together so I'm not worried about those boards.

I really just want a great power supply that produces 'clean voltage' to cover all my bases and even be 'future proof' for lights, LEDs, fans and such. The ATX style look robust with the ability to make adequate power.

Thanks,
Andy

I would go with a linear type. Transformer, diode bridge, regulators, amperage and voltage meter, short circuit protection. Fairly easy build lots of projects on the DIY site. You can set voltage or make adjustable.

You need to know the absolute maximum/minum values, voltage, current and voltages needed. Make a list of all the games you want to use and power requirements, Then you have a good starting point.
