I am in the process of deciding which way to go with my Ms. Pacman restoration and had a question about PSU's. I'm convinced that my current PSU is busted and know it can most likely be repaired...but I was curious to find out if I could use one of the newer boxed PSU's. I figure with Ms. Pacman being a popular machine, someone may have made a PSU that provides all the varying voltages.

I guess I'm just looking for a more experienced opinion on the topic. Thanks!

If this is an original Ms. Pac-Man, there then is no power supply unit (PSU). The power
(+7vAC and +12vAC) comes from a step-down transformer in the bottom of the cabinet.
The PCB converts it from AC to DC (and other stuff) to power the game logic.

Look in the bottom of your cabinet and you should see two transformers. If the game is not an original Ms. Pac-Man, has been converted or modified, then you probably won't see two transformers. If that is the case, a normal switcher should handle what you are looking for ($20 or so).

For the record, it is possible to power an original Ms. Pac-Man PCB with a switcher if the step-down transformer is missing or bad. You will have to wire it in though (there are sites that talk about doing this).

Ah okay.

Yes, it is an original and I did remove the PSU myself. Some of the wiring is old and in general its rather dirty.

I need to look for a schematic or somesuch so I can figure out what is potentially missing and what needs to be replaced.

What kind of powersupply would I be looking for if I wanted to switch to a 48-1 board in there instead? Would I still use the same PSU or use a different one all together?

Yeah, but mine was missing to begin with as well as the hacked to death harness. ;)

Yeah in that case its cheaper and easier to go with a switcher. The switchers are alot more friendly on your electric bill compared to the old transformer. Other than that I see no reason to change them.

If you were to switch to a 48-1 you would need to wire the cab for Jamma and you would use a regular switching power supply.
