power Supply - Molex (Ken?)

I have been rewiring, 'molexing' and documenting stuff on my website. I have been wiring control panels with 12 pin molex to be able to swap boards and controls with ease.

Now, I have thought about adding a molex connector off the power supply as well. Bob roberts has it like this:

Molex 9 position .093 Molex connector.

Pin 1, 2 & 3 are used for +5 VDC
Pin 4, 5 & 6 are used for ground
Pin 7 is used for - 5 VDC
Pin 8 is used for +12 VDC

Is this any sort of standard? I think it would make more sense to set the pins like this:

Pin 1, 2 & 3 are used for ground
Pin 4, 5 & 6 are used for +5 VDC
Pin 7 is used for - 5 VDC
Pin 8 is used for +12 VDC

You can use anything you want. I do the same sort of thing for control panels. I have a "universal" set of controls (2 joysticks 3 buttons each player) that go to two 15 pin molex connectors. I have pigtails that adapt my control pinouts to the game I/O pinouts. You can do the same thing from the power supply. All you need is a pigtail that maps your ps plug to the game system you are using and you are set.

I do have two other random thoughts. I follow the normal wiring protocols: "Hot" (i.e. powered up connectors) are the socket side. "Cold" (i.e. the side being powered) should have the pin side. That way you don't have powered pis that could be easily shorted by anything that lays across the pins.

The second random though is that the original layout would provide the maximum protection in case of a pin meltdown. That way if a +5V pin or socket melted down from heating, it would probably hit one of the ground pins rather than one of the other powered pins. It shouldn't happen, but I have seen plenty of burned +5V pins and sockets, so I know it does happen.

Section two, "Video, Redemption, and Pinball Standards" standard 17 (adopted May 1988, revised November 1988).

All standard DC switching power supplies shall have two separate standard snap and lock connectors (Molex brand connector)

A: The DC output connector will be a Molex 3x3 9-pin snap and lock (keyed); pins 1,2, and 3 are +5 Volts; Pins 4,5,and 6 are ground; Pin 7 is -5 Volts; Pin 8 is +12 Volts; Pin 9 is a spare (not normally used). Female Molex # 03-09-1091 is used on the power supply side of the harness. Male Molex # 03-09-2091 is used on the game cabinet side of the harness.

B: AC input connector will be a Molex 3-pin snap and lock (keyed) Pin 1 is Line (hot); Pin 2 is Ground; Pin 3 is Neutral. Male Molex # 03-09-2031 is used on the power supply side of the harness. Female Molex # 03-09-1081 is used on the game cabinet side of the harness.
