I have a guy switching out power supplies from the black switching supply to a dynex DX-400wps. It doesnt have a -5, do I have any options?

Side question....what does the -5 do anyway?

As of now the Game does power on but wont load up. The only thing not hooked up is the -5.

What game is this in?

Are you trying to convert from a black cased screw terminal power supply to a computer style one?

NBA JAM.

Yes I am trying to convert. Im actually talking someone through it who has no game experience. Its for an event in NY and has to be working soon.

not sure if the -5v is used or not...check out page 39 of the pdf...it shows -5v on the power supply, but it isn't showing up anywhere on any of the connectors.

even though there is no adjustment on the power supply, it might not be putting out 5 volts.

-5 is used for the sound on midway/williams games, anytime it's been missing on peoples machines the speakers emit this crazy screeching noise (from what i've been told). All my cabs have -5 so i've never had this issue.

it sure does, pins 5 and E

Bah. That's just a diagram of standard JAMMA wiring.

Looking at the actual game wiring diagam, and the schematics, I don't see anywhere the -5V is used.

I'd bet a doughnut that it'll work just fine w/o -5V.

Well now im stuck. Because I know he has the +12 and +5 hooked up along with the grounds and It still wont go on. Like I said before though it does give the boards power now except it wont load up.

Hey guys I got it figured out.

1st off the -5 was there but it works without it.

2nd thing is the power supply I bought them had 2 different +5 outputs. I had them check the voltage and it was running at 4.8 so I looked at the manual and seen the second +5 so I had them switch it and it worked perfectly.

THanks for the quick responses.

the sound works properly without the -5? interesting.

edit: after a lil more manual browsing and looking at a few other manuals, i guess i'll have to agree with the rest in saying that it's not needed until i see or hear otherwise (for this specific sound board). i'd still hook it up personally just for future games going into that cabinet but that's just me.

Yeh I dont know about that, All I do know is the -5 was there but is currently not hooked up and the sound does work.

Two things:

a) For most newer PC switchers, 12V is the base voltage. You need a minimum load on 12V for ANY of the switcher voltages to be correct -- and most boards don't put much of a load on 12V. Break out the loading resistors.

b) your second 5V is probably 5VSB. This voltage is usually separately regulated using a linear IC, which is why it's right when everything else is wrong, BUT, it is meant for very basic power management circuitry and usually supports 1A AT MOST. I wouldn't run a board off that.
