Powder Coating?

Does anyone know if there are any shops that are reasonably priced that you can mail parts to? Last time I checked I only could find one local powder coating co and they wanted a couple hundred bucks to do a control panel. Do any of the memebers here offer or has ever considered offering this as a service?

I can mention to you guys what other has said that the more you do the more you save. Chances are if you have a Harley Davidson dealer or custom chopper shop, I work for a dealership, you might be able to slip your parts in with theirs, but the issue is, that its the color going on.

We do shit tons of high gloss black and red.

If you bring in a coin door and want satan black in a wrinkle finish that means they have to set up for the color and texture for a single part.

If it was gloss black, then it would hang along side all the other 20-30 pieces and be absorbed into the cost.

We use Maas brothers

They are the best in the business as far as local to us...

You might be able to ship.... but metal weighs a lot generally....

For what ever reason powder coating up here is super inexpensive. For example marquee brackets cost me about $3 each to do, coin doors are about $15 and control panel about $30. It's not even worth my time to rattle can anything other the bolts that tie it all together.

Ditto, for me a CP is less than $10 and turn around is usually the next day.

I didn't see it mentioned, but part of the powder coating process, if you take it to a powder coater, is they sand blast the parts to get them down to shiny metal first. That is kind of a bonus in my mind. I had the CP surround from my Aero City powder coated and it looks and feels pretty rad. I took the parts to the powder coater with gunk still on them from the removed stickers and God knows what else, and it came back to me like it was fresh off the Sega factory floor.

It wasn't inexpensive, but all things considered, it was worth it to me. Often, if you can get your parts in with a larger order the powder coater is doing, and you aren't particular on an exact color (i.e. "white" vs. "lustrous pearl"), you can get a great deal.

You can apparently get plywood/mdf powder coated now as well:

That place is about an hour and a half from me. I want to scratch build a Ms. Pac-Man. I was looking for someone near by who could CNC the panels, but then I saw they did that, so I asked if they could match a Pantone color if I sent them one.

Based on their pictures they do mass quantities of parts and not one-offs, but asking doesn't cost me anything.

Made some calls today - I think for what I am looking to do the price is going to be reasonable.

I'm in Long Beach and looking to get a few items powder coated. If you don't mind me asking, what place(s) did you end up finding that has a good price? I began my search yesterday and so far found a couple places, but eventually ended up finding out that they only do business-to-business jobs.

That is in fact extremely cheap as far as powder coating pricing goes. That's amazing!

Okay, so here is the place I found:

Nu-tec Powder Coating
2990 E Blue Star St
Anaheim, CA 92806

See attached - all of that for $80: $30 for the sandblasting and a minimum of $50 for the powder coating - I probably could have added a little more to that and stayed within the minimum.

But...
Was quoted 3 to 4 working days and it will be two weeks tomorrow!

In their defense they said the sand blasting booth went down.

So, I have not yet picked up or seen my completed order and they were way over on the estimated turnaround time but...

The price was right so we'll see :)

The owner was very friendly and I got good vibes about the business - also Yelp reviews are good

I will post photos and an update when I get my parts back tomorrow

...whaddaya think about that control panel - niiiiiiiice!

I think it could actually use a few more holes - haha

It came that way from the previous owner - wow.

:)

Did you just do straight black on everything or do they offer any texture options for things like the coin doors? I read some of those Yelp reviews and some of the complaints are about turn time so hopefully you get your stuff back when they said you would! I'm curious to see the quality. :)

Those are the type of coin door frames I've had trouble with at 2 local shops. Interested to see if yours come out straight.

No sure what your intentions are, but in the future I'd think about welding up the holes you don't need prior to having it coated. I've used knock outs in a pinch, but recently I've just had my buddy water jet plugs the exact size/thickness.

Coating that control panel was just for fun. That is going to get wrapped with a new CPO. I did get button hole plugs from twisted arcade - I'm going to give that a try, as well as creating the plexi glass overlay, that should probably do it. I'm not set up here to weld those holes closed, I should probably look into finding someone local who can do that, it does sound like a great idea. Thanks!
