Possible to rom swap between TMNT2 and Sunsetriders?

I'm looking for a way to have sound in my TMNT2 which has a blown out sound cpu. TMNT2 uses same hardware as Sunsetriders however, i noticed there are 2 less ram chips on the Sunsetriders board. Can I do a simple rom swap from TMNT2? Will have have to move over the ram? Or is this just not possible?

The other difference is one of the clocks is a different style on TMNT2.

Highly unlikely, you would have to move the 5 big mask roms too and those are soldered in. The boards are clearly related by TNMT2 has some chip locations populated that are empty on the Sunset board.

That's not bad, I just need to find a sunsetriders now...

Spoken like someone who has never worked on a Konami board. The traces on those PCBs are extremely fragile. I've repaired a couple of Simsons boards that are nearly identical to those that had broken traces from a previous repair attempt on just one of the mask ROMs.

I would expect the removal of those, unless you have some really expensive high quality tools, would do more damage than good to both the donor and source PCBs.

And the sound mask ROM, making it at least 6....

I don't understand this thread. Why wouldn't you simply replace the CPU?

Whoa, whoa, whoa.... Now why would we want to mess up this discussion with something sensible? :p

I agree with Hewitson. If your going to pull chips off the board, why pull 8 or more when you could get the job done by replaceing just one?

You're right, i've never worked on a Konami board yet. I was just judging by looking at it and similar repairs i've done it didn't seem like it would be too much different. I guess it has its curve ball.

Because that 1 is a tiny surface mounted cpu with 60+ traces going to it. It's just too small for tools I have but the roms are doable.

I just have a Weller temp controlled soldering iron and use this : http://www.chipquik.com/

There are some videos on their web page about how to use it, but here is another good one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kyaz4Zrd78

You can do this yourself. Speaking as someone who has worked on those Konami boards, I will say you have a much better chance of success using ChipQuik and removing the sound CPU versus doing what you had in mind.

Very awesome! I was actually looking around for a solution like this! Thank you.

Yeh, Konami boards are very very fragile, the traces are hair width and easy torn, if you dont have a desolder station the chances of breaking a track or plate through hole are pretty high. QuikChip is the way to go - so easy!
