my work colleague was just going on about how he loved WEC LeMans 24 by Konami. So I Googled for it to show him a pic and found this picture on Wikipedia:

WECLeMans24.jpg

I noticed it appears to be a UK arcade as there's a Supreme JAMMA cabinet directly behind the WEC LeMans 24.

So I then thought 'cool!', and tried to identify the rest of the games. The next machine totally threw me.

1. It 'appears' to be a Star Wars upright.
2. The top section is nor normal - it has a flat facing marquee. Zooming in on the picture it appears to be original.
3. The marquee appears to be Return of the Jedi.
4. Under the marquee appears to be a blurred illuminated fuji logo /|\
5. The game still has the flight yoke.
6. The side art has a red band around it.
7. The tie fighter is not in the correct location, it is more like the proto artwork from the flyer and what Darin printed as the tie fighter is within the border and does not break out.

Here is a pic of an Atari Star Wars to clarify what I mean:

So, what's everyone make of that?

I can't work out what the 2 games are on the back wall either, they look possibly vector.

Fourth one back looks like a Major Havoc marquee. Fifth one back looks the same as the SW cab in question, just with a different marquee. Sixth back is Enduro Racer. Those two in the back look like they are running the over-cabinet viewer monitors. Still can't make out the game on the screens.

Wouldn't it also be feasible that it's a conversion? Or was this before conversions had started happening?

To answer all questions.

I'm from the UK and probably have the largest collection of Atari Ireland cabs in the world.

An Atari Ireland StarWars upright is exactly the same as the US version, which makes these even more special.

Looking at the picture they also appear to have the moulded SW bezel, so i'm pretty sure these are Atari made.

The ROTJ marquee appears to be exactly the same as the normal I,Robot/Firefox style cab, you can even make out the deathstar to the right of Jedi.

Interesting innit!

You're right.

The top is very Pole Position! Like the US one too!

If you look at the bottom piece is has the curve like a Star Wars UR.

I reckon these are definitely Atari made, now I just need to find one haha.

Conversions have always been around to some extent, you take a beer, an operator, a wiring harness, and a wooden box and you got yourself a conversion. I've seen some weird transplants into cabinets. As for conversion kits that wouldn't have been around in popularity in that time but could have still existed, look at PP to PP2.

The person who uploaded the photo is from Germany and states that the picture was taken in 1989. Perhaps email him to see if he has more photos of the arcade in question. Perhaps this was a German kit or something?
