I don't know about the rest of you, but Portal was one of the best games I'd played in a LONG time back when it came out. It's a shame it was as short as it was, though that added to its charm, I suppose.

Now that Portal 2's release is a mere couple of months away, I figured I'd start up a thread for discussion since I know there are a handful of Valve fanatics here :)

For those on the fence or maybe still trying to decide what platform to go with, here's a tidbit you should already know, but may not: The PS3 version will link with your Steam account and you'll get the PC/Mac release for free, not to mention it'll be cross platform.

Below are plenty of video goodies which everyone has probably seen by now. I'm still disappointed they changed Wheatley' s voice (from Richard Lord to Stephen Merchant), but I suppose I can deal.

I would like it on a console in addition to PC, so the logical choice is the PS3 version. I'm still on the fence, though, due to possible preorder bonuses through Valve as well as limited local co-op functionality of the PS3 (since two PSN accounts cannot be logged in at the same time for trophies, etc).

I would likely be playing co-op on a console more than PC since I'm trying to convince the wife to play, but she hates the PS3's inability to let her log in the same time as me, making trophies useless to her, so I'm once again leaning toward the 360 version, despite a free PC copy with the PS3 version.

Decisions, decisions....

I loved the first one and that wasn't even a full game. Now it is and it looks super promising. I can't wait to play co-op and I can't wait for this to finally come out!! I thought that it was coming out in February, but now it's April? More waiting! :(

I don't know why you wouldn't get it for the PS3. Didn't they say that the PS3 version will be the best console version of the game? Plus you get it free for steam! You can't go wrong with the PS3.

I'd get it on 360. Don't have a PS3, and my laptop's probably not good enough to run it.

I loved the first one and that wasn't even a full game.

I'm calling BS on this statement. :p Portal was one of the most complete, engaging experiences I've ever had in a video game, it was brilliantly paced and written. Just because it wasn't 15 hours long doesn't mean it wasn't a full game; I felt more satisfied finishing Portal than I have playing most other games, even those that took me 40+ hours to finish.

Of course I've got Portal 2 pre-ordered on Steam. If I had a PS3, that would be the logical route to go, but I only have a 360, so I don't really see any reason to buy it on that format.

Can anyone advise me how precise a player's thumbstick control needs to be in Portal? I didn't play the original because I'm not very good with thumbstick controls so first person shooters are no good for me. As a result, as awesome as the Orange Box is, most of the games in it are unplayable. But Portal was one I was considering. (By the way I only have a PS3 so I can't download the original Portal to play as a standalone, that's an XBox 360 exclusive)

Now that a dedicated Portal sequel is coming I want to play it but I have asked on other forums how good of a shot I'll need to be and people tell me initially the game is easy and fun but toward the end (say around Level 18 or so) the ability to time perfect shots as you fly through the air is mandatory and I'm worried I won't be able to play to the end.

Anyone care to put in their two cents worth?

I'm still getting it, I just want to prepare myself for disappointment that I won't be able to complete it.

The limit of my thumbstick skills are games like Assassin's Creed, Fallout 3, and Red Dead Redemption. But I can't play Call of Duty to save my life.

Well, looks like its time to buy a new motherboard/CPU/RAM/video card again.

Orange Box was the last time I did that.

I cant play FPS on consoles either. Unless I can hook up a KB and mouse to my PS3?

I absolutely loved Portal, even though I never did finish the game. I only had a few levels left to go, I believe... I never did re-rent it to get to the end. Actually, the fact that I never bought the game is pretty lame, come to think of it. I totally could have gotten some replay out of that by now. I'll definitely have to pick it up this time around.

I'm trying to convince the wife to play
Whoa! Did you get married?! You really need to embrace your inner Noice a little more, Matt, and keep us up to date on your doings.*

I think you should be able to pick it up fairly quickly. I played it on 360, not PS3, and there is a difference in the feel of the analog sticks between the two controllers, but the 360 one works very well in my opinion. It'll take practice, that's for sure - I too used to be a PC only FPS player, but got over that once I got a 360. It did take time and I'm obviously better on PC than I am on the consoles, but I'm comfortable with the controls on consoles now.

The nice thing about Portal in this regard is that there aren't any enemies constantly after you, meaning you can go at your own pace and even just play around with stuff until you get used to things.

Haha - to my knowledge, you're the first to catch that. I've posted generic comments mentioning it here and there over the last few weeks. I didn't make a big deal out of it because we didn't make a big deal about it. Hell, we didn't even take a vacation or have a big ceremony. I'm still considering taking some time off work so we can go somewhere and maybe call it some type of 'honeymoon' but to us it was just another day :p

But yes, thanks! :D

I used to average 10+ posts a day once upon a time!

Congrats in that case. Did you make the rats the ringbearers?

Just caught that as well. Congrats.

Portal 2 pre-ordered and pre-loaded = can't wait!

I like the idea with Steam that when you buy a multiplatform game, then you are eligible to download and play versions of the game on all the platforms it is available on, and all have access to your save games on Steamcloud.

Uh oh, looks like we might get it early? Perhaps in 17 minutes?
