Can you use a Popeye monitor with a non Popeye PS?

I recently converted a Popeye to a DK. I put in a DK compatible PS and a gazillion dollars in wiring. I put it all together and had it up and running ALL day Saturday with no problems. I plugged it in today and I get a Scrambled/dim screen and a continuous wah wah wah sound.

I took the board out and plugged it into my Jr can and it works great. I left it plugged into my DK PS and ran the monitor cable to my Jr monitor and that worked great. I am guessing either the Popeye monitor died or it is not getting enough juice from the PS.

I find it odd that the monitor would die in one day. It was super crisp and sweet on Saturday.

I thought all the early Nintendo cabs (DK, DKjr, Popeye) used the same monitor and the same 110v iso trans?

Here are some before and afters. I have a spare monitor that I could install, but was worried if it was the PS it could kill another monitor.

Saturday hooray awesome DK

I know the monitors are 100v and you don't want to plug one into a wall socket at 110v.
The PS should have the socket for the monitor and the marquee light on it, I would think you might have an issue with that PS possibly.

The power transformer did not damage the monitor. All Nintendo games of this era use exactly the same monitor. You just had an unrelated failure. And, if it was an overvoltage problem, the monitor would be totally dead.

If you want to double check, simply test the voltage at the power socket in the bottom of the game, you should get around 100v, possibly a little higher. That's OK. Both sockets (the one for the marquee light, and the one for the monitor) are exactly the same.

Was the Popeye monitor recently recapped?

Ian,

I am not sure about the cap status of the Popeye. It seemed to be working great. It was super bright and crisp on saturday. I turned it off Saturday night and tried turning it on today and got the mess. The wah, wah, wah sound makes me think I need to do an audio rebuild, but I am not sure if a cap kit can fix the junk I am seeing.

I will test the PS socket. After posting this I plugged the Popey monitor into my DK Jr and got the same scrambled graphics and wah, wah, wah sound.

Mods, can I move this to the monitor section? Sorry
