Hey all,

Found a Popeye at a Flea Market. Not terrible shape- but definitely not perfect. Joystick and buttons are originals but will likely need work- the joystick was having trouble with making lefts. T-molding has pieces missing. Side art is pretty worn. I offered 200 but the Seller is firm on 300.

What do you guys think of the price?

Also, would fixing the buttons/joystick be a huge pain in the ass?

I've heard the machine is light- around 165 lbs- can anyone confirm that??

I want to check the internals but I've read somewhere that some of the original nintendo games are photosensitive. Does anyone know if that's the case with Popeye?

Thanks!!

If you want it I would go for it its not a bad deal joystick problem might just be a micro switch so that only $5. plus its an easy convert to a Vs.Unisystem. Is it a particle board or Plywood cab plywood is lighter but both are between 150 & 200 lb they are not bad I have moved mine on my own.

Price seems high for Popeye, but it's only worth what someone will pay. I think your offer was very fair. As for the other questions, yes the cab is much lighter than others. The joystick is an easy fix, most likely just needing taken apart and cleaned. Same with buttons. As stated above, if it's a switch issue they are cheap to replace. The rom chips are eeprom, meaning uv erasable, however unless there was direct sunlight to the board for literally weeks, you will be fine. I would be more concerned with the monitor condition as fixing that would be much more work than cleaning a joystick and replacing t-molding, etc..

$200 seems fair based on your description. Popeye doesn't get much love and tend to go cheap or sit for some time. I enjoy mine and have the high score save but I also used to play it a lot when I was a kid. Make sure it is a game you want because they can be hard to sell for more than $200 unless really nice.

Thanks for the input all, I'm starting to lean towards getting it if I can haggle him down 50 dollars.

Now that I think of it- I saw a red horizontal line on the top right ONCE after I died while playing... Could only get it to happen once and haven't seen it on any youtube videos. Does that sound like the PCB is going bad?

The greatness of popeye is in the attract mode sounds playing in your arcade while you enjoy other games. :)

Yeah $200 sounds about right without seeing pics, or knowing the condition of the monitor. With that being said, it's not like $300 is paying out the ass. I've overpaid for a few that I wanted.

Thanks for the reply all.

So I went to see it today. Checked the board, the monitor, sound. Besides needing to turn the brightness up on the screen everything looked fantastic as far as the inside goes. The outside needs some TLC but I knew that coming in.

Seller wouldn't back down on 300 but I figured what the hell. Had my brother and his SUV there so we just took it right out of the flea market.

So I got the damn thing, lugged it in my house, and here I am doing some basic cleanup.

Pics soon!

I love mine... and iirc, I paid about $400 for it (granted that was with delivery from the Northern US to FL). I wouldn't be disappointed with $300 assuming there's no major cosmetic damage and things work.
