Ok, I have tried researching this for quite some time now and keep getting mixed answers. I own a DK3 cab and want to know if I could put a Popeye board in it with the current power supply. I know that popeye had a special power supply and doesn't require the -5v. I know that Popeye is a vertical game and I would have to rotate my monitor. Seeing as I have a DK3 cab I do have the edge connector that is used for both games. All I really need is a confiration if the power supply that is used in the DK games will work correctly for Popeye. I know that the Popeye PS won't work for DK since it doesn't have the -5v. I already have a DK, DKJR, DK3, MB, and 8 Ball Action boards for my arcade machine and really would like to fill it out with Popeye. Thank you for any help.

sure it should work fine if you get the horizontal monitor brackets.

mario bros will also work, but you will need the 2 player control panel.

Thank you for your response, I am very grateful but I have to ask. Can you confirm that this works or are you assuming. I only ask because I have heard people tell me that it will and that it won't but nobody was ever able to 100% confirm this. I already have the horizontal bracket for MB and the CP. I already own a MB board and play it quite a bit. I just don't want to buy a Popeye board until I can confirm that it will work with a stock power supply that is used for the DK games and MB.

Mr. The King,

I am about 4000 miles away from my schematics right now. It seems that if you would pull the schematics from DK3/edge connector and Popeye/edge connector you could compare the PS to edge connector pin outs and see if they would work together.

Sorry if this hasn't helped.

I assure you Popeye won't play in a DK3 cabinet. I've had to make a DK3 harness out of a Popeye harness. If you look at the DK3 manual, it clearly shows two small power connectors/harness' that attaches to the popeye harness because the pin outs are much different and the PS is also different.

Thank you guys, you all helped out a lot. I've been going back and forth with this for some time now because I would think that it couldn't be done but then people would tell me that it would. You all are awesome.

See though it looks like I keep coming up with conflicting data that it will work but then I'll find places that tell me it won't. I understand that you made a DK3 harness out of a Popeye harness but have you ever done it the other way around? It seems that most people convert Popeye cabs into DK but it's hard to find people that have done it the other way around. I'm downloading the manuals right now.

Reread the first link closely. That is a member here on the forum.

BTW - Deadly is absolutely correct.

"The only thing used on the original power supply is the power block and the one outlet on the left (black cord plugged into it). "

If this was the one that supported your dream....the above statement says it all! :D

It is not possible to use the ENTIRE power supply from DK for a Popeye. The block itself and the outlet for the monitor. Of course, there are modifications that weren't outlined in this changeover (from what you want to do). Hopefully, he'll chime in.

Personally, I run a Mario Bros and Popeye in the same cab. Both have the same pcb connectors (with modifications). However they are running on different power supplies in the bottom of the cab.

Long story short...what you originally asked is not possible.

Ok so I compared both the DK3 and Popeye pinout from the manuals, side by side. I'm not seeing anything that would indicate that the DK power supply would not work with a Popeye board. Would you mind explaining to me what exactly is different and make this not work? Sorry I'm just so confused about this.

"A lot of people have asked if the Power supply for Popeye can be used with Donkey Kong, and at this point, I am not sure. If you get +12V on Pins E and 5 and you get -5 on Pin F and 6 then there is no reason it wouldn't work. "

Right but I'm not trying to get a Popeye power supply to with with DK. I'm trying to get a DK power supply to work with Popeye.

shall I post a pic of the inside of my popeye cocktail, that shows the dk style power supply?

I have played popeye and mario bros in my dkjr cab once I switched it over to an edge connector harness.

popeye's power supply sucks, dk's rocks

a dk power supply can work with nintendo vs boards, if you have a vs pak harness

You sir are awesome!

Well after reading this thread I was inspired to install my Popeye pcb into my Mario bros cabinet and now I smoked my popeye pcb. I did the same research everyone seem to and I come back to the same question; how is it that the jamma adaptor works with all nintendo boards but yet I smoked my Popeye board installing it into a mario bros cabinet? The jamma adaptor would need to supply the +12 and the -5 for the DK games and so it would be present when you use a Popeye board too, Right?

But What do I know.....I'm the one with the dead Popeye pcb

I've got a Popeye with no monitor that I popped an EZ into to see if it worked...and I got nothing on screen.

Thinking that perhaps I was having another issue, I pulled the PCB and put it in my DK3...and was also presented with nothing on screen.

There is a bit of corrosion on the PCB, so I'm sure that's why it's not working, but I didn't have anything smoke on it - not visibly, anyway.
